Any Changes to the US-Thai Treaty of Amity in 2025?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the US-Thai Treaty of Amity. For those who are unaware, Thailand and the United States share a very special relationship. There's no real other word for it. Thailand is America’s oldest Ally in the Pacific. We've been allied to Thailand for some 190 years. I think we've been in contact with each other's nations, been in contact with one another for some 200 years. But yeah, the US-Thai Treaty of Amity's first iteration is 190 years old; it has evolved a little bit in that time period.
The question posed by this video is, 'do I see substantive changes to both the relationship and the Treaty itself in 2025?' The answer to that is No, I do not see many substantive changes on the horizon with regard to that topic in 2025. I think the US-Thai Treaty Amity will continue to stand; I think the relationship continues. We saw the reaffirmation by Anthony Blinken when he came to Thailand and met with, I think it was the Foreign Minister here to reaffirm our Treaty relationship. Again, I think everything's 5x5 as it were; everything's just going along fine.
For those who are unaware though, the practical benefits to Americans doing business here in Thailand are substantial. Americans doing business here in Thailand can be accorded under the Treaty or their corporation I should say, can be accorded what is called “National Treatment” meaning they are treated as if they're a Thai National for purposes of doing business here. So, a Thai company, a corporation here in Thailand can be set up with more than 51% ownership by an American under the terms of the Treaty because they are accorded National Treatment. This is in spite of the provisions of the Foreign Business Act here in Thailand. So these are substantial benefits for Americans. I don't see them going anywhere in 2025.
