Do Thai Work Permit Holders Get "National Insurance"?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Work Permits in Thailand. I thought of making this video, well specifically we are discussing Work Permits and the issue of National Insurance. For those who are unaware, those who come to Thailand to be an employee either in a business or perhaps they come to teach, things of this nature, basically you come to Thailand to get a job, if you do obtain a Work Permit and your employer is taking care of your work authorization in the appropriate manner, yes you may in fact become part of the Thai Social Security System i.e. the National Insurance system and you may be covered for insurance purposes under that scheme.

That said, this may not apply across the board. Let me get into it, hold on just a second as I quote a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Summary of Thai Visas available: January 2024. Quoting directly: "Foreigners with work or labour permits are covered by the Thai National Insurance scheme." So I just quoted a small black surf there I urge those are watching this video go check out that article in detail.

This is another one of these situations where, not to pick on the Pattaya Mail but where a conclusion is drawn that is not actually completely accurate. So again if you are here in Thailand as an employee yes in fact you may be covered by the National Insurance scheme. That said, if you are in Thailand self-employed, you probably are not going to be covered under the Social Security because generally speaking, ownership and management of corporations are not necessarily considered covered by that program. It's primarily designed for basically the working classes if you will here in Thailand.

So again this is not something to necessarily presume i.e. that by just getting a Work Permit especially associated with setting up one's own business, that one is just going to automatically be put into the National Insurance system because quite honestly in the vast majority of cases, unless there is some sort of extenuating circumstances, that is just not the case.
