History of the US-Thai Treaty of Amity

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the US-Thai Treaty of Amity. For those who are unaware, the US-Thai Treaty of Amity grants certain benefits to American citizens here in Thailand that are not readily available to nationals of other nations. Most notably a Company that has been vested or certified as an American Company and has an Amity Treaty Certificate, that Company will be granted National Treatment under Thai Law. So notwithstanding the fact it may be 100% American owned, it will be treated as if it is a Thai Company and in a very real sense, that is a major, major benefit.

With respect to the age of the Treaty, I want to go ahead and quote this. This is from the US Government website, export.gov, the article is titled: Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the United States of America. Quoting directly: “The US-Thai Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations of 1833 commonly referred to as the Treaty of Amity is a special economic relationship between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Thailand that gives special rights and benefits to US citizens who wish to establish their businesses in Thailand."

So interesting, again it goes back to 1833. That is a pretty good long time to have commercial relations between two nations, and I believe, I am kind of pulling this off the top of my head, but I don't think I am incorrect, I believe Thailand is the United States' oldest continuous ally in the Pacific region. So again, and this is indicated by the length of time that that Treaty has been in effect.
