Remembering the Spirit of the US-Thai Amity Treaty?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the US-Thai Treaty Amity. I thought it was worth making this video in light of the fact that we are going through these trade negotiations here in Thailand. Trump is doing his thing, his art of the deal thing, where he is coming on strong and they are having these negotiations. There is a lot of talk about the fact Vietnam has already made a deal and what is Thailand going to do.

I think ultimately this is going to work out; it's going to take a little bit more time I imagine to negotiate it. I really do hope both sides recognize the long-standing ties these two countries have had. This is very important to me. I am an American-born Thai; I was born in the United States of America. I emigrated to in Thailand; I became Thai. The alliance is important to me; the countries are important to me; the relationship is important to me. I set up this firm under the US-Thai Treaty of Amity some years ago. Again, it was a very different scenario back then, but long story short, yeah, I was able to do that because I was primarily doing US Immigration Law, in fact that is all I was doing. It is a very different time now

That said, the thing to take away from this video and to understand is that the Amity Treaty I think is important. It's almost 200 years old. The relationship is over 200 years old - the diplomatic relationship between Thailand and the United States. It has been an overall positive relationship. It has been almost a uniquely one-sided positive relationship amongst all of America's relationships around the world; oftentimes it is a mixed bag. When it comes to Thailand, the US and Thailand have been friends and partners and allies for decades, centuries now, nearly two. So I think it is worth pointing out in light of some maybe hard-nosed negotiations that we are going to see in light of all these trade negotiations, to remember just how good friend's America and Thailand are. And it is worth also pointing out, Americans here in Thailand are accorded serious benefits that other nationalities really can't partake of in terms of the terms of the US-Thai Treaty of Amity. Most notably they can own their companies 100% outright whereas other nationalities have to deal with more of the vagaries of the Foreign Business Act. So that is just a fact, and it is a very big benefit that I think it's worth noting that Americans can partake of in doing business here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
