Thai PM Seeking Deeper Thai-American Trade Ties?
Transcript of the above video:
For those who are unaware, the United States and the Kingdom of Thailand have a very long bilateral relationship which is evidenced in the fact that the US-Thai Treaty of Amity or some iteration thereof has existed for 190 years as of the time of this video. Even going back further than that there was even communication between Americans looking to trade out this way in Asia some 200 years ago and positive interaction between the Thai at that time and Americans who were out this way as well. So, there is a deep history of mutual respect and mutual benefit that is evidenced in the Thai-American relationship.
That said, I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Nation, that is nationthailand.com, the article is titled: Srettha targeting US investment in Thailand at APEC CEO Summit. Quoting directly: "PM Srettha Thavisin will seek investment from US Business leaders at the 7-Day APEC CEO Summit, starting on Saturday in San Francisco." Quoting further: "Several big deals with US corporations are already in progress, building on previous talks during Srettha's visit to the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York in September. Tesla, Google, Microsoft, Citibank, JP Morgan and Estée Lauder have reportedly responded positively to the PM's invitations to invest in Thailand." That is great news and I am really happy our new Prime Minister is making such headway. Quoting further: "Srettha is planning to hold talks with more than 10 major corporations at the APEC CEO Summit. The talks will cover possible investments in various sectors including electric vehicles, electronics and digital industries." Quoting further: "The Prime Minister will also promote the land bridge project for a new trade route from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea. Srettha is seeking foreign investments for the 1-trillion Baht project to link the Pacific and Indian Oceans and open a new East-West Trade Corridor."
Yeah, so as far as the Thai-American relationship goes, nothing but good news that I can see there. And again for those who are unaware pursuant to the terms of the US-Thai Treaty of Amity, it is possible for American Businesses doing business in Thailand to receive so-called national treatment i.e. treated as if they were Thai, notwithstanding the provisions of the Foreign Business Act meaning an American company can come to Thailand and engage in a wide variety of businesses and that company can be 100% American owned pursuant to the terms of the US-Thai Treaty of Amity.
