Thailand and China Sign Deal Regarding Eastern Economic Corridor?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor and a recent public-private partnership if you will, that's what it being called, between China and certain developing businesses in the Eastern Economic Corridor.
For those who are unaware, Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor was created some roughly 6,7 years ago - a little longer actually, going back more like 10 years ago now, man I'm feeling older by the day - it was essentially created to promote certain types of business activity in 3 specific provinces most notably Chonburi, Chachoengsao, and Rayong. And again there are a lot of special benefits that can come from doing business in the Eastern Economic Corridor. It's a body very similar to the BOI, the Board of Investment in Thailand; It can dispense certain business concessions. In many ways it's a very dynamic location in Southeast Asia to be doing business at this time. On top of that, they are very quickly improving the infrastructure in terms of both rail and air infrastructure, not to mention the port facilities down in that area as well, Laem Chabang Port specifically, with regard but you being able to act as an entrepôt if you will or as a production centre that then distributes outward from this region. So if you were looking for a place to watch in terms of future business activity in Southeast Asia, the Eastern Economic Corridor would be high on the list.
Before I jump into the article here, just very quickly, my better half and I set up a restaurant here in downtown Bangkok, Pancake Palace is the name. As the name implies, breakfast anytime but we're not purely breakfast, we also have American Diner style food: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chilli bowls, buffalo wings. We've also got grilled cheese sandwiches, tacos, Coca-Cola in glass bottles. If you're interested, come check us out, links are in the description below. Come on down, we'd love to see you.
Now back to sort of this the legal discussion. Quoting directly from the Nation, that's nationthailand.com, the article is titled: Thailand's EEC signs first Chinese public-private partnership deal. Quoting directly: "As Thailand's flagship development programme, the EEC is intended to deepen global integration and drive economic upgrading across five target Industries: Healthcare, digital economy, next-generation automotive, the bio-circular green economy and high-end services. Quote: "The collaboration will serve as a starting point to steadily advance the overseas expansion of China's computing and electricity coordination technologies." So interesting. We're talking about, this is big stuff going on here.
Now folks have seen me do videos in the past where I was critical of China; recently I was in China. I was critical of China most when they were trying to put their police on our streets here in Thailand, that's just a no-go for me; I'm never going to like that. But at the same time, I've also had my issues with them, especially certain things that have happened this past summer where I do think that is probably abating overall. I don't think anybody really wants conflict in Southeast Asia so that's a good thing. But in terms of doing business, I mean what you can't say anything other than the fact that China is a powerhouse especially out here in East Asia, and I don't see any evidence to suggest that's going to end. So long story short, in terms of a collaboration between two countries, especially here in Southeast Asia, as long as it remains a purely business relationship, frankly I think it will probably end up being a good thing. That said, it remains to be seen, and we will certainly be keeping folks updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
