Easing COVID-19 Lock Down in Thailand: Phase 2

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the COVID-19 Lockdown reopening and specifically we are discussing Phase 2 of this reopening.

In a recent article from the Nation, that is nationthailand.com, the article is titled: Second Phase of Lockdown Relaxation to Start from May 17.  Quoting directly: "The Government has approved the second phase of easing of Lockdown measures from May 17."

Quoting further: "Businesses that could reopen are:

1. Stores and department stores, community malls such as consumption, computers, electrical appliances, bedding, building materials, furniture, office supplies, flowers, clothes, cosmetics and sports equipment, commodities, gold and jewelry, service providers, internet café, laundromats, repair workshop, car shops for changing tires, repairing and cleaning, credit business, insurance companies, drugstores, dentist clinics, nail salons, restaurants, food courts and food centers

2.  Large retail shops, Building material stores, furniture houses, large wholesale markets such as Simummuang Market and Talaad Thai.

3. Beauty clinics for body and skin; no surgeries on face.

4. Gym and fitness centers and this gets kind of specific; only allow non-physical contact sport with only three people in one team and no viewers such as badminton, table tennis, yoga, fencing, squash etc., partially open fitness centers for free weight training, no work outs in groups or use of exercise machines, public pools allowing number of people in pool equal to lanes at least 7 feet long and only allowing use of one hour per person, hotel meeting rooms and convention halls for meetings of limited numbers of people, libraries, galleries and museums, film crews to start production with 50 people from all sections of filming studio; must have space for people to eat individually.

There no changes in the measures on transportation and the curfew will be relaxed by 1 hour from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. compared to 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. at the present.

Again that is the Nation, nationthailand.com, title is: Second Phase of Lockdown Relaxation to Start from May 17th. There is a little bit more nuance in there. I urge folks who are watching this video to go check out that article but we are coming into Phase 2. They are going to partially lift some of the curfew. They are definitely lifting a lot of the major business closures look like they are coming off so we are probably going to see a substantial amount of activity or at least a relatively substantial amount of activity compared to the past six weeks.

So clearly Thailand has taken appropriate precautions. The numbers here have gone down significantly. It is my understanding in the past week we definitely had one day at zero infections, zero deaths; I think it might actually have been two days of Zero reported infections but don't quote me on that. I could be wrong on the two-day thing but the numbers have been substantially low. It has really gone down quite a bit and it appears that they have managed to contain the spread of this thing and they are now taking measures to go ahead and get the economy going again as there are substantial issues that are now coming to the foreground as a result of the fact that the economy has been shut down for this rather prolonged period of time.

So, as things change we will keep you updated.  As noted, international travel has not been affected by this so the same restrictions that applied in the last video where we talked about in Phase One, seem to continue to apply. The Amnesty for those holding visas here in Thailand, those foreigners here in Thailand, continues until July 31. We will update you if anything substantially changes with respect to this but for now it looks like we are solidly going into Phase 2 and I think we are probably going to see Phase 3 and a full lifting in the weeks to come.
