Expats: "No Need to Panic" Regarding Thai Taxes?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well, the lack of a need to panic on the part of expats as it pertains to taxes. Unfortunately over the past roughly two years primarily, and very acutely in roughly the past 8 months, we have seen a lot of foreign so-called tax professionals who have no business advising regarding Thai Tax Law. As we have pointed out, there are restricted occupations here in Thailand, professional certifications are the most restricted. So those foreign nationals, those who do not possess Thai nationality who are advising foreigners here in Thailand over their own Thai Tax liability are clearly completely in the wrong from a legal standpoint; they are not operating legally in Thailand, and their advice should be viewed with great suspicion for exactly that reason. They're completely illegal and in my opinion, they have been driving people to file things they don't otherwise need to file in order to generate business for themselves and it's causing frankly a set of negative consequences for the expat public here in Thailand.

That being said, I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Thai lawyer updates retirees on personal income tax. And again, I'll be the first to disseminate information from other real professionals. This is a real professional colleague; this is a Thai lawyer who has expertise in Thai Tax talking about this stuff, not some charlatan from overseas. That said, quoting directly: "Pattaya Mail has recently had a number of inquiries from expats notably retirees and residents here more than half the calendar year, about their overseas income transmitted to Thailand since January 2024. Let me say at the outset that the typical retiree living on income already taxed in the home country, has no need to panic or to feel that they are under some kind of imminent revenue or immigration threat to their welfare."

Yeah, I have said this before on my channel as well and it is good to see this echoed from another actual colleague on the topic. And again, the reason we have all this consternation, all this frustration, it's been whipped up by frauds, it's been whipped up by stamp pimp charlatans as I have discussed in many other videos, and it is great to see that what I have talked about over the past year roughly being indicated by another.

But yeah, the thing to take away from this overall, expats, no need to panic. It's not like this is The Terminator or something, we've come to Judgment Day, and they are sending out robots to track you down over whether or not you remitted a remittance in a year and a half ago and you owe 2,000 baht or something to the Thai Revenue Department, or something of that nature. That is not what's going on here. The vast majority of folks in Thailand who are retirees probably don't even need to worry about tax matters.

That said, those who may be worried about it, the underlying facts in your given case will drive the final analysis and conclusions regarding any possible tax liability. Those who are worried about such things, it's probably a good idea to contact a legal professional, gain some insight and guidance into how best to proceed.
