Thailand To Change Law On Marriage?

Transcript of the above video:

For those who watch this channel with any kind of frequency, you will see that we are doing this in very different format. I usually do these standing up; I wish I was doing this one standing up as the other ones I have made in this same format but unfortunately I have the flu. I tried to do some of these videos standing and quite honestly, it got to the point I couldn't get through it. If you look back on some of the ones, I was really sweating and straining to get through those, so please bear with me. I hope to be back to my usual posture next week but that said, here we go.

I thought of making this video after reading a recent article in the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, and to be clear, as the title suggests we are talking about the possibility that Thailand will be changing its laws on marriage. So again going back to bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Push to raise minimum marriage age to 18. Quoting directly: "The Cabinet has acknowledged a proposal seeking legal amendments to raise the minimum age of marriage from 17 to 18 to be consistent with International principles. Under the proposal, amendments must be made to the Civil and Commercial Code and relevant laws." So this is also coming on sort of the heels if you will, or seems to be coming in parallel with recent proposals to enact Marriage Equality legislation here in Thailand, so-called same-sex marriage, marriage between transgender, LGBTQ, however you want to look at it, this is coming, it looks like maybe they are regularizing this to be in line with International standards. Then on top of that, they may also be changing the rules as well regarding gender and the Marriage Laws here in the Kingdom. So what does this mean? Well specifically to this point, if it is raised from 17 to 18 under the Civil and Commercial Code, then obviously you will have to be 18 in the future to be able to get married. Will this actually come to fruition? Well it remains to be seen but it looks like they are fairly serious about promulgating this so I think it is likely we will see this change actually enacted.

Meanwhile what is going to happen with the Marriage Equality Bills? They are still being discussed and I suspect we probably will see something coming either in parallel with this or shortly thereafter or maybe even shortly before. But in any event, we will certainly keep you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
