Criminals in Thailand: Beware the Lion Dancers
Transcript of the above video:
Yeah, lion dancers. For anybody that is not aware, there are folks in Thailand who go up and down the streets and dance and do the drums and they have the like lions; it's cool. If you haven't seen it, it's very cool. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from actually Thai Enquirer, via Twitter or X under the headline: Police disguised as Lion Dance Performers Arrest Repeat Burglary Suspect in Nonthaburi. The reason I thought of making this video, this doesn't seem to pertain to a foreigner, but I just want to make it clear more than anything with this video, the Thai Police are not messing around. They will dress up as Lion Dancers to go after you. Let me just read this. Quoting directly: "Police Officers disguised as a lion dance troupe have arrested a burglary suspect following a series of incidents targeting the home of a senior officer under the Metropolitan Police Bureau, authorities said." So first off, if you were a burglar, maybe don't target the folks that are in the Metropolitan Police; just one man's opinion. That said, quoting further: "The case began on February 4, 2026, when the officer reported multiple valuables missing from his residence, including numerous Buddhist amulets and two 12-in Buddha statues, with signs of forced entry. A complaint was filed at Prachachuen Police Station. The suspect allegedly returned to the property again shortly afterward and fled when spotted. Investigators later traced some stolen items to a seller known as "JoJo," - by the way, I thought of, the thumb is just too good with the lion dancers and everything, so it just is what it is. But I immediately thought of the intro. to the movie Gotti, which is arguably one of the best mob movies you could ever watch where he is talking about this guy, his name is JoJo. He's got cufflinks that say JoJo, he's got a belt buckle that says JoJo, he's got all this stuff that says Jojo, and then he walks into a place in Vegas a guy walks up and he goes, "Oh Mr. Jojo, your baggage is coming." He says, "hey, stop using my name. I don't want anybody to know I'm here." There's a great scene in Gotti. It’s a great movie; it's worth a watch.
That being said, quoting further: "JoJo believed to frequent temples in Bang Bus Thong, Nonthaburi. Officers encountered the suspect at one temple, but he escaped after becoming suspicious. On February 18, police received information that the suspect planned to meet associates at temples in Sai Noi District. Officers deployed undercover at a temple fair, posing as lion dance performers. That evening, they identified a man matching the suspect's description, approached him while maintaining the disguise and arrested him without further incident."
Yeah I urge those who are watching this, go check out the link on Twitter just to watch the video. I mean these guys aren't messing around. The police were not happy about this. I can't imagine why. A member of their own was getting burglarized so they take him down using a lion dance troupe. Okay, this is Thailand; it's fantastic.
That said, the only point I'm trying to make with this video is yes, the police are not messing around here. They are very willing to use very creative means and methods to collar their man if you will; not something to mess around with. So for those who are unaware, yeah Thailand is actually quite a safe country. I was talking to somebody about this the other day and they were talking about some YouTube video out there that was trying to make Thailand out to be somewhat dangerous. Yeah, not really. It's just not. It's just not a dangerous place, and in fact when they start having problems, again they will find creative ways to keep the law in line with civility. One of them might be that they might pop out actually as a lion dance troupe; you never know. So the thing to take away from this though is at the end of the day the police are very assiduous here in Thailand. Crime is what it is, but it's something that's easily, well easily might be the wrong word, but it's something that is dealt with in a straightforward manner and again, in ways that perhaps westerners might not see coming.
