"Phase 2" of Thai Traffic Enforcement Begins April 1?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests we are discussing phase 2 of Thailand's traffic management. Let's just jump in here. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Nation, that's nationthailand.com, the article is titled: Thailand starts strict nationwide traffic enforcement April 1. Quoting directly: "At present, the Traffic Management Centre is in the final stretch of Phase 1, "Warning Before Fine", which will end on March 31, 2026. Data since January show that 196,028 warnings have been issued to offenders through the Police Ticket Management system in a bid to raise awareness and encourage changes in driving behaviour before stricter measures take effect.

Entering Phase 2: Strict law enforcement from April 1. From April 1, 2026, the Royal Thai Police will move into Phase 2, marked by strict nationwide enforcement of traffic laws. The crackdown will focus on 10 key offenses, which are major factors behind road accidents. Samran stressed that road users should review and adjust their driving behaviour to ensure full compliance with the law for their own safety and that of fellow road users. He said the full enforcement of the law is primarily intended to build a safer driving culture and reduce losses on the roads."

So interesting. Thailand, since the beginning of the year, has been implementing a new set of policies with regard to traffic and traffic enforcement. The first quarter of the year is seen basically a warning, a grace period if you will, showing people and sending out warnings and notices that hey if you continue this behaviour, next time you are going to actually see enforcement action, be that a traffic ticket, a fine or maybe even something more serious, again depending on the nature of whatever the possible infraction might be. That said, I think that this heralds a shift with regard to the thinking as far as traffic policy. I'll be interested to see how stringently this stuff is rolled out and I think it's worth pointing out it's being rolled out April 1 just in time for Songkran which those are some of the deadliest days in Thailand especially for matters pertaining to drunk driving.

So it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I expect what is going to happen is we will probably see a tightening up if you will or a more stringent regime, regimen, however you want to put it of traffic law enforcement here in Thailand starting from April. That said, exactly what that looks like remains to be seen so we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
