Should Fake Foreign "Tax Consultants" Be Reported to Thai Authorities?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, unfortunately we are yet again discussing a bunch of scams that are coming about, I would say as a byproduct of the underlying scam of foreigners coming into Thailand claiming to be able to provide tax consultation and tax advice, notwithstanding the restriction of that under the restricted occupations here in Thailand.
I have done the videos before where we specifically cite from the Department of Employment, from the Labour Department here in Thailand, the restricted occupation specifically cited and in there, Tax Consultation is specifically noted as something that is restricted from foreign nationals. So, it is illegal for foreign nationals to dispense advice regarding Thai Taxes here in Thailand. They don't have the authority to do it; they don't have the qualification to do it, and it is affirmatively illegal for them to do so. And we now are seeing scams that are sort of coming out as a byproduct of this scam because other scammers are seeing, oh there is a sort of ripe group of primarily probably retirees here in Thailand who are greatly scared of this whole tax situation and we can prey upon them to ask for information we can then use sort of in an identity theft kind of scenario I imagine, to basically steal money from these people. So, one scam has now begotten another and it's one of the reasons I am hoping that in 2025 we will see some kind of response to this from Thai Law Enforcement.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, pattayamail.com, and I thought of making this article because maybe we don't have to wait for Thai Law Enforcement, maybe folks can be proactive unto themselves about going after these people who have no business claiming to be able to provide tax advisory services regarding Thai taxes. Quoting directly from the article titled: Pattaya Retirees targeted in latest in scam calls scandal, pattayamail.com. Quoting directly: "Fortunately neither expat divulged their bank account or card details." If you read that article, and I urge people to do so, scammers were calling up some retirees - they seem to be British - asking for information about their banking, asking for personal ID information, again basically fishing for information that they can then use to scam these people basically. Quoting further: "Although one did give his full name before realizing he was the subject of an internet scam. Both have now registered the experience with the police anti-online scam operations centre at hotline 1441." It is worth noting that.
As discussed in other video, folks that are here in Thailand that are not Thai nationals who are claiming to be able to provide tax advisory services for Thai taxes are operating in direct contravention of the restricted occupations here in Thailand. I pointed that out many times below; I'll put a link in the description below to the restricted occupations.
But for those who are concerned about this and scammers in general, it might not be a terrible idea again to contact the anti-online Scam Operation Centre at hotline 1441. Just dial 1441 to go ahead and report folks who are operating illegally here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
