Thai MP Calls To "Inspect Shady Businesses" Run By Foreigners?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well the issue of "shady businesses" run by foreigners. Let's just jump into this. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Crackdown to curb 'job stealing' foreigners. Quoting directly: "In a related development, Chalermpong Sangdee, a Move Forward Party MP for Phuket, has petitioned the House Committee on Economic Development to inspect shady businesses in the island province after receiving complaints about them."
Yeah, there appears to be a lot of consternation down in Phuket amongst the local community regarding the influx of foreigners who have come in and for lack of a better term been behaving badly or they have been operating businesses or doing work that is restricted from foreigners in favour of Thais, and that is sort of the way the labour market here works. This is a protectionist sort of regime because the local authorities here want to insulate the Thai Labour market or the Thai labour pool if you will, from outside foreign influence or from foreign activity.
And at the end of the day, when you have got an MP in Parliament saying "hey committee, we need to look into this", that's a pretty big deal and I have to presume that there is probably going to be some level of ramifications, some consequences if you will in a practical sense to that study down the line. So something to keep in the back of your mind especially if you're down in Phuket, you want to be in line with the law because it looks to me like further scrutiny is on the horizon.
