Thai Police "Arrested 16 Foreign Women" on Sukhumvit?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing issues pertaining to foreign nationals being arrested in Thailand in what seems to be a mass crackdown being undertaken by the Thai Police especially in the lower Sukhumvit area here in Bangkok.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent posting on X by Khao Sod English, that's @KhaosodEnglish on X. Quoting directly: "Bangkok - 20 March 2026, Police and Social Development officials have arrested 16 foreign women accused of soliciting prostitution in a Crackdown in Bangkok's Sukhumvit area, authorities said. The operation took place at about 8.30, or 20:30 in Sukhumvit Soi 4, Khlong Toei district, following complaints from foreign tourists and reports on social media. Officers from Lumpini police station, together with investigation units, Metropolitan Police Bureau teams, Immigration Officers and officials from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, conducted surveillance before moving in to make arrests. Authorities said 16 suspects were detained, comprising 10 Tanzanian nationals, five Kenyan nationals and one Vietnamese national. They were charged under Section 5 of the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act for soliciting or approaching individuals in public places" - that's an important distinction, as I have discussed in other videos. Thailand takes a kind of different approach with regard to the issue of prostitution. The notion of what I call the promiscuity element or the open and notorious element under Thailand's law on prostitution is something that's key here. Understand, Thai policy is not overly interested in the activities of consenting adults behind closed doors, but where it is out on the street, where it's causing a public nuisance, to say the least, that is where law enforcement will get involved and that's what we are seeing here - that said quoting further: "for the purposes of prostitution in a manner deemed open and causing public nuisance." Again, it's these elements that are really central to the analysis legally of prostitution and law enforcement dealing therewith here in Thailand. That said, quoting further: "Officials from the Department of Women's Affairs and Family Development will impose administrative fines before transferring the suspects to Immigration Bureau Officers. Their visas will be revoked, and they will be deported under section 12(8) of the Immigration Act. All suspects have been sent to the Immigration Bureau headquarters in Suan Phlu for further legal proceedings."
So yeah clearly, again heightened scrutiny on foreigners generally, those who are deemed to be overtly in violation of Thai Law, it appears that not only are Thai Police taking it seriously, but they are also handing this over to Immigration Authorities to deal with deportation. So the thing to take away from this video is one, no, the Police are not unaware of this. They don't have a lackadaisical attitude regarding enforcement of these rules and they are cracking down and it does lead to not only arrest but also deportation, and I expect it will also lead to matters pertaining to blacklisting from Thailand as these folks will probably be biometrically recorded as they are put through deportation proceedings, and the likelihood of them ever returning to Thailand is very low.
That said, again this is all presuming if they're guilty, and of course everybody in Thailand is innocent until proven guilty. Again adjudication and due process have to be undertaken in order for this to be concluded. That said, based on what I'm reading and seeing, I don't think that there will be much issue with that. I'm not saying it would be proforma, but I expect it will be a rather open and shut matter on the part of basically state prosecutors and the apparatus to go ahead and adjudicate the matter and then see these folks deported. That said, the thing to understand about when coming to Thailand, don't try to come here to engage in illegal activity it only leads to bad consequences and could lead to a situation where you can never return to the Kingdom of Thailand.
