Thai "Police Lieutenant Charged with Murder" for Shooting Cannabis Shop Owner?

Transcript of the above video:

As macabre as it sounds, this is a video we are making because oddly enough it's falls right in the bailiwick of things that we talk about on this channel, notably police news as well as Cannabis News. But that said, this is a really tragic story.

I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from The Pattaya News, that is thepattaya.com, the article is titled: Pattaya Police Lieutenant charged with murder after drunken shooting of Cannabis Shop Owner; Officer Ordered Out of Service Pending Disciplinary Probe. And again, I urge those who are checking this out, you may want to go check out The Pattaya News for further information. That said, quoting directly: "A senior investigator from Pattaya City Police Station has been charged with murder and firearms offences after allegedly shooting and killing a 41-year-old Cannabis Shop Owner during a late-night drinking dispute in the popular Walking Street area. The incident occurred around 1.06 am on Sunday April 19th, 2026, behind a Cannabis Shop at 104/3 in The Walking Street zone. According to Police the suspect, bank now publicly identified as Pol. Lt. Jirasak Srikatthanam, 54, also known as "Major Joe" is a Deputy Superintendent in the Investigation Division of Pattaya City Police Station. He had recently completed the class 53 police sub-lieutenant training course the previous year and was generally regarded by colleagues as a diligent and good-natured officer. At approximately 9:00 am today Pol. Col. Anak Sarathongyu, Commander of Pattaya City Police Station, told The Pattaya News reporters that the suspect had been formally charged with murder as well as violations of the Firearms Act, including discharging a firearm in a public place and carrying a gun in public without reasonable cause. A disciplinary committee has been established to investigate the case for serious misconduct, and the officer has already been ordered to leave Government Service pending the outcome of both the criminal and internal probes. He was immediately taken into custody and placed in a detention cell at the station. Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting stemmed from an alcohol-fuelled argument. The suspect, who was heavily intoxicated, reportedly became involved in a verbal dispute with friends while drinking. The victim, the owner of the nearby cannabis shop and not originally part of the dispute, attempted to intervene to calm the situation." Again, I urge those who are looking at this video, go check out that article on The Pattaya News, that is thepattayanews.com. Very tragic and that's all I can say is all around it just sounds like the one of those situations where intoxication as well as possibly high tempers resulted in somebody dying that very much it sounds like, did not need to - obviously nobody needs to die - but it's a sad state of affairs. It's not a great situation.

That being said it has been quite big news and again as it pertains to Thai Police and it even pertains sort of coincidentally to matters pertaining to Cannabis here in Thailand although seemingly tangentially, it sounds like this person was just minding their shop and then this thing flared up and they went over to try to calm things down, and it went the opposite direction. This person lost their life. Again innocent till proven guilty here in Thailand so an adjudication is necessary before ascertaining whether or not there was in fact a crime, and if so, who perpetrated it.

That said, obviously this is pretty major news here in Thailand and we will certainly be keeping folks updated as best we can on this channel. That being said, bear in mind this case could probably go on quite a while unless there's a plea or something. However, it remains to be seen how it's going to play out, so we will certainly be keeping folks updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
