Thai Prison Is Not a Place You Want to End Up

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the fact that Thai prison is not really a place you want to end up. I've done videos like this over the years; it's kind of just, almost a little reminder video, especially all you partying kids coming into Thailand. It's pretty darn hard to go to jail here if you're just a normal person, you're not really trying to cause trouble. It can happen but it's usually, it's like, I've done the videos, sort of 'foreigners behaving badly' and whatnot, it's like yeah, I mean some of these folks it's like you were kind of asking to be thrown, asking to be made an example of so to speak, to quote the movie Casino. Joe Pesci, ‘this guy is just begging to be made an example of’.

There are a lot of those instances but I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Two decades of Pattaya expat nutters, weirdos and crackpots. Just for fun, I urge you to read this article. There's a lot of interesting stuff in it. It talks about a book somebody wrote, their memoirs about meeting all of the interesting characters here in Thailand and it is one of my favourite parts about Thailand, we do have a lot of characters, both foreign and domestic. That said, quoting directly: "The unfortunate Sean is beaten to death in a Thai prison after an argument, another guy unwisely smokes in bed whilst a goodly number of others die of liver disease. Most of the characters in the book, supplemented by photos, are now dead which may be a blessing in disguise from the legal point of view." Again, I urge those who are watching this video, go check out that article. It is kind of humorous and anybody that has lived in Thailand for a fairly prolonged period of time is going to be well aware that yeah, we get some characters here.

The point I'm trying to make is it is sad when we do see folks become incarcerated here and yeah, it's not a place you want to be, the Thai Prison system, and it's really not a place where you want to get into any arguments with much of anybody in there. I have been to Klong Prem, I've been to the Remand Prison, I've been to the Provincial Prison down in Pattaya; I've seen the facilities, no place you want to be in. Again, this is not a scaremonger video. It is quite difficult to get yourself into a situation where you're going to jail in Thailand because quite frankly, I'm not saying Thai police don't want to put people in jail, but they're not running around looking for reasons to do a bunch of extra paperwork to incarcerate people. It's not that sort of thinking. That being said, it does happen; it does happen. People do go to prison.

So, the thing to take away from this video is 1) be on your best behaviour here. Again, we all have fun in Thailand; it's a great place to be, it's a great place to have a good time, very difficult to go to jail. But there are instances where people go that extra mile. Don't be one of the people that goes the extra mile and if you do find yourself in a situation wherein you are having some sort of altercation with the Thai criminal legal system, it may not be a terrible idea to contact a legal professional, gain some insight and guidance into how best to proceed.
