What's with Foreigners Getting into White Trash Brawls in Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
Yeah look, the title sort of says what it says. I'm from Kansas and at a certain point you just have to kind of say, 'call it what it is.' I don't know what's going on here but in the last year or so especially, it seems like we have just had an influx of foreigners, primarily of Western extraction it would appear, seemingly for the most part Caucasian, I don't see the Laos coming into Thailand and try to get into big fights with one another, but again it appears to be of a Caucasian extraction that seems to be wanting to come over here in Thailand and then use this place, I don't know, they are all getting together and having all kinds of fights and things.
Let me be clear, one, I'm making this video because - I started doing these sort of Foreigners Behaving Badly videos a while back and honestly when I started it, I sort of thought, for one thing we do a lot of content on this channel. I look for content to just be able to sort of fill a 3-minute slot, if nothing else, to be able to get on down the road, and I started kind of commenting on that. It has an interaction with legality and with immigration because these folks that get caught out engaging in this behaviour end up having some sort of ramifications in terms of legal adjudication or fully being deported, things of this nature. Going back, there was a situation involving I think there was two kiwi gentlemen, maybe gentleman's too much of a word there, they disarmed a traffic police officer. These were odd incidents, but they happened pretty rarely; that was sort of why I started making videos on it. Now, I don't know what's going on here. Now I do understand we are on the tail end of the high season which that tends to be when you see some of the more egregious behaviour playing out in Thailand and I don't know why. I think it's because a lot of the folks that are here aren't folks that necessarily work a 9-5 job somewhere else, come out to Thailand for two weeks over the holidays and then go back home. They are a little bit more, shall we say, individualistic at their core but kind of prone to, maybe a little wilder, maybe a little more prone to getting into trouble. I don't know how to put it, but yeah, at the end of high season we tend to kind of see this phenomenon.
That said, initially I thought of making this video actually after seeing on Twitter or on X, whatever you want to call it, the recent, we'll throw this up on screen. This was from Mio_Sub, that's MyColleagueMio2, that is @MyColleagueMio2. Quoting directly: "A tough-guy tourist in Thailand tried to act intimidating and provoke locals, but the situation flipped instantly. A local person quickly fought back and shut him down within seconds." Now you see the video. It actually erupts into kind of - the whole street eventually ends up on the other side of this person. I'm not bringing this up out of prurient interest, I really actually don't like getting into this kind of content, I don't think it is particularly great for the image of the country, but this isn't something Thailand is doing.
Now, as we will get into in other videos I am making contemporaneously with this, Thai Immigration Officials including members of their Intelligence apparatus are now starting to comment on the issue of Immigration, "quality tourist", folks being allowed to come in in the aftermath of this wave of new visas and things, and I think we may see a bit of a paradigm shift on this stuff. That said, this phenomenon is really odd.
From another outlet, The Phuket News, that is thephuketnews.com, the article is titled: Foreign tourists clash in Patong Jetty brawl. Quoting directly: "A late night brawl involving foreign tourists broke out at the pier at the southern end of Patong, causing alarm among bystanders as the fight spilled into a roadside parking area." Quoting further: "The incident occurred about 9.10pm last night (March 17), after a group of tourists returned from a boat party off the coast of Phuket. Video footage of the incident shows two shirtless male tourists" - I may go ahead and put up for the thumbnail of this, I haven't decided yet, of old Randy Marsh from South Park, the scenes where he would go to his kid’s like little league game and take his shirt off and want to get into fights with people, "oh what are you going to do?" type of stuff. That said, quoting further: "Two shirtless male tourists arguing before shoving each other, quickly escalating into a physical fight. Attempts by their companions to break up the altercation instead led to more people joining in, turning the scene into a chaotic group brawl." I urge those who are watching this video, go check out The Phuket News for further information. And I've seen another couple of postings. I don't want to just keep doom-scrolling on this particular video of just these folks getting into this.
My question being raised is, why are folks coming here to do this? I mean Thailand is a pretty peaceful place. It doesn't really like to attract violence and this sort of thing. Meanwhile, I'm also making this if for no other reason than to act as a warning to the foreign community - both expat and tourist alike - there are ramifications for these things. Thai Policy makers are looking at this stuff. A new Parliament is coming into session, and it is one that is operating from a much more unified position than we have seen Thailand operate from at least legislatively in a significant period of time; if not 15 years, then easily 25 in terms of policy making. And there have been a lot of folks looking at the situation as it pertains to the foreign community here and the Immigration Policies that have been promulgated in roughly the last 18 months that I have commented on directly myself. And I have to say that look, if you're in the foreign community and you can do anything to try to tamp this kind of behaviour down, it would behoove you, because this kind of stuff does lead to eventual policy outcomes. I've done the videos about people down in Phuket talking about how concerned they are about Visa situation and letting in foreigners with not a lot of reason to particularly be there, and other locals have brought this up. They are concerned about inflation in the property markets or undue inflation, especially in the Thai Property Market. They are also concerned about a lot of foreigners coming in and working illegally. The entitled attitude by many foreign nationals when it comes to being over here and just sort of flouting Thailand laws regarding things like work authorization. All of this can culminate into something of a perfect storm which could lead to bad outcomes for the foreign community as a whole.
So in terms of what to take away from this video, if nothing else, I'm hoping it will act as a warning that will maybe cause folks in the foreign community to maybe kind of reassess their own behaviour because it could lead to a situation where we could see serious negative implications for the foreign community here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
