Would Chinese Police on Thai Streets Assuage "Safety Fears"?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing would Chinese police on our streets here in Thailand assuage the Chinese safety fears here in Thailand. I have got to be honest with you, I am sick and tired of this narrative. We have been seeing this since roughly August of 2023 this whole thing of “Thailand isn't safe; none of our tourists are going to come from China to Thailand and therefore you need to put police on your streets. It looks a lot to me like extortion; it looks like China is using their tourists or trying to use their tourists as leverage on Thailand to make Thailand put police on these streets. And I've done the videos on this before, okay? This is not out of the blue; this is not me apropos of nothing saying this, they have literally said that they tried, the last Government tried to put Chinese Police on the streets down here. We don't need it; Thailand is sovereign. I can't think of anything more colonialistic than putting foreign police on another country's streets, so I think we all agree in Thailand we don't need this. But yet again, the Chinese seemingly and others in the media, seem to be pushing a narrative that we you know need to do something for China in terms of safety and what is that solution going to turn out to be? Oh, we need their police here. That is what it seems to be what they are pushing for.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Chinese cancel Thai trips amid safety fears. Quoting directly: "Hotels and airlines have started to see mass cancellations from Chinese tour groups during the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, while new bookings from independent tourists are also slower due to concerns over safety in Thailand." Question sort of ancillary to that, what are the numbers from every other country? Because it's looking to me like those numbers are making up for whatever shortfall we are seeing in Chinese tourists, because if you go outside anywhere here in Thailand right now, you will see tourists from all over the world, and I mean literally. Farang, Caucasian tourists seemingly from the West, the Anglosphere, Europe. Meanwhile we see all kinds of folks over here from what appears to be the Middle East. We've got Indian tourists here all over the place but oh we are missing the Chinese and oh, the bookings are down, da, da, da I read another article recently - I don't think I quoted it on this channel - but they noted that the Chinese economy is going through a downturn too, so also look there's just not a lot of inherent demand for tourism down here compared to times past because locally they are having issues in their economy. But setting that aside, the thing I find most pernicious about all of this narrative, is this notion that Thailand is somehow unsafe, which first of all anybody that has ever been here that has ever walked the streets in Thailand, please put it in the comments if you have ever felt unsafe, okay? Especially daytime and stuff. Yeah, I understand walking down a dark alley at night probably doesn't feel great, but I'm here to tell you, here in Thailand you are not going to get attacked or have any kinds of problems in terms of being robbed or something, in those scenarios. Now I get, we are not all totalitarian, social credit wielding states that require our people to be under constant surveillance all of the time. So, in terms of comparatively to China, maybe Thailand is a little less “safe”. We in America call that “free”.
That said, quoting further, last week Eason Chan a singer and actor from Hong Kong, cancelled his planned concert in Thailand citing safety concerns over Chinese fans visiting the country.." - seriously man? Quoting further: "..while Hong Kong's Security Bureau sent a task force to Thailand this week to follow the case of their citizens being lured to job scams in Southeast Asia." And as we will get to, it wasn't the Thais doing any of this. Quoting further: "Natthriya Thaweevong, Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports, said Hong Kong security officials confirmed that tourists from Hong Kong have never been deceived or abducted in Thailand." So what the heck are we talking about? It sounds to me like you up in China are just trying to make Thailand look bad, look like it's unsafe here and trying to extort us with your tourism numbers to make us put police on our streets that we don't want. Thai Police patrol Thai streets; this is Thailand, that is how it works. Why is this so hard to understand? Especially from a nation like China that was put through the hell of colonialism? Do you really not understand Thailand's concern with this? Why they wouldn't want this and continuing to brow beat us with the notion we are somehow "unsafe" and to continue to try to leverage your tourists against this country, I find appalling. Quoting further: "The group of people affected were nationals who had been hired to transport goods to Southeast Asia but were lured to enter Myanmar via Thailand." So now, because Thailand borders places, we get blamed by association? This is ridiculous; I am sick of hearing this stuff about China; I am sick and tired of hearing about how their tourists aren’t going to come down here because we are somehow unsafe. Anybody that has ever been here, I challenge you to find where we have lack of safety here in Thailand, especially lack of safety to the point where we have to be colonized by a foreign nation, and have those foreign police on our streets.
