Dutchman Charged with "Stealing ATM in Khon Kaen"?

Transcript of the above video:

So this is another "Foreigners Behaving Badly" video and the thumbnail, I have got to be honest with you, I'm almost making the video because I wanted to make the thumbnail. We hear about these ATM theft cases, it seems like they come up about once every 2 to 3 years out here it seems like. Somebody will just see some alone ATM out there and get it into their head, “Hey, I’ll wrap a chain around it and drag it on down the road.” I don't know what the long-term planning is with this because none of these things ever seem to come off. They always seem to be caught, oh I don't know, when they're dragging an ATM down the road at some 30 miles an hour or something and there are sparks flying everywhere. It makes something of a scene; the police are pretty aware of that. Also there are alarms on these ATMs and they go directly into the police precinct and they are immediately aware of what location the theft is occurring at. This isn't like some Thomas Crown affair, heavily thought-out type of theft.

I made another video contemporaneously with this one where actually it looks like there were very specific things that seem to be driving the motive behind all of this and actually strangely enough there seem to be implications, possible implications with regard to Thai Tax Policy that may have ultimately at least been the impetus for at least some of the momentum behind this attempted crime. That said, I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Dutchman arrested for stealing ATM in Khon Kaen. A Dutchman was arrested for stealing an ATM in Muang District of this northeastern province early Sunday morning. Quoting directly. "Pol. Col. Pakpoom Decharuangsin, Chief of the Ban Ped Police Station said the Dutchmen, identified only as Sijtse, -  I have a hard enough time translating transliterated Thai nam sakuls and things, surnames, but Sijtse, you can read it yourself on the online thing - quoting further: "was arrested while hiding on a roadside near a stolen ATM in his pickup truck on Maliwan Road in Tambon Ban Thum early Sunday morning. Police made the arrest after being informed of the theft. At the scene, there was an ATM of Siam Commercial Bank that was tied up with big chains that were attached to the truck. The ATM was apparently dragged from a shop for about 20 metres."

Yeah, again this doesn't happen yearly. This is pretty rare actually or rarer, but over 17 years I have probably heard of this, it's less than a half a dozen times but not much less, it is like five times. So every couple two, three years, you will hear one of these stories that somebody just gets it in their head to try and rip off one of these ATM machines. It never goes well, I don't know, it just doesn't because how far are you going to get with one of these things chained to the back of a truck? And where is the getaway point where you manage to get the thing opened and things? It is just not a well thought out crime. That said, the one thing to take away from this video I guess for foreigners out there is if you are going to come to Thailand maybe don't rap chains around an ATM and try to run off with it; it is probably not a great idea.

That said, as I explained a moment ago, I did make another video contemporaneously with this one where I get into how this stuff may interact with some of the underlying facts in the case. I urge those who are watching this video, go read that article in detail. It seems like there was some sort of internal family financial dispute that caused this person to then get upset and run off and decide it was a good idea to try to rip off an ATM. I also think there may have been again tax policy implications in this, where the things that this person did or allegedly did, and possibly due to his thinking on Thai Tax Policy, and then the outcome of those steps and this person's probably position - what he perceived to be a negative outcome for him - resulted in his I think probably desperate decision for lack of a better word, to try to rip off this ATM. So that seems to be what it was based on. Again there is some conjecture and speculation that is utilized when coming to those conclusions. I urge those who are watching this video, go check out that video on our channel but that said yeah that looked to me like that was what was driving this. But yeah, it is never a good idea to try to rip off an ATM, it never goes well. Like I said I have read these stories for years and I don't think in a single one of them, I have ever heard of anybody getting away with it.
