Foreigners Arrested for Drugs and Work Permit Violations?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing well as the thumbnail suggests, it is another one of these Foreigners Behaving Badly videos. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Lebanese men arrested on Koh Samui for drugs, illegal clinic. Quoting directly: "Immigration Officers on Koh Samui have arrested two Lebanese men accused of running a restaurant as a front for drug dealing and operating an unlicensed Chinese medicine clinic." Quoting further: "A search found a large quantity of drugs including ecstasy, methamphetamine, ketamine, cocaine and magic mushrooms hidden in a bedroom. Officers also discovered equipment used in traditional Chinese medicine. Both were charged with multiple drug offenses. Mr. Awala also faces charges for practicing traditional Chinese Medicine without a license."

Well I have to imagine that that particular charge is probably not going to be one that that person is particularly worried about when comparing it to the other charges especially for ecstasy, methamphetamine, ketamine, cocaine and magic mushrooms. Magic mushrooms by the way so-called, are the mushrooms containing psilocybin; I have done a video recently where we talked about that. Those have been sort of, I don't want to use the word “decriminalized" because it is really kind of a nonsense word, but we have seen Thailand take a different approach toward mushrooms recently, where those type of mushrooms are now considered something akin to like a prescription drug, so they are not considered on the same level as most definitely Cocaine, ketamine and methamphetamine will be treated by relevant Thai Authorities. That said, quoting further: "Police said the restaurant was registered as a company with three Thai shareholders alongside Mr. Awala. However, evidence suggests the Thais may have acted as nominee shareholders." Yeah, again nominee shareholders is something that Thai Authorities are concerned about and have been concerned about here recently.

That stated and the thing to understand and take away from this video at the end of the day is yeah Work Permit violations are problematic; practicing medicine, Chinese medicine, in Thailand without a license is going to be a real problem. But look, if you are coming over to Thailand to get into the illicit or illegal drug trade, not a good idea okay, just generally and across the board. I know that's kind of an almost platitudinous statement in the sense that it is just sort of self-evident, but yeah, a lot of people unfortunately seem to come over to Thailand for whatever reason and think that this is a good idea. This is what happens. I don't imagine that these two are going to have a particularly good run of it now where they have been caught with this or allegedly but, they are innocent until proven guilty. They are accorded due process here, and they will get that, I am sure. But that said, I mean they get to their premises and all of these different violations sort of stack up to at least you have to kind of think that where there is smoke there is fire, I guess.

That said, look the point of the video and the thing to take away for foreigners looking to possibly come to Thailand, if you are looking to come here to engage in the drug trade, maybe look for someplace else to go or maybe find something else to do.
