24 Hour Entertainment Operations in Thai EEC?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the possibility of 24-hour entertainment operations, operating hours of 24 hours a day, presumably 7 days a week in the EEC. Now that is the Eastern Economic Corridor. We have discussed the EEC in a number of prior videos and it is kind of becoming increasingly, the momentum seems to be getting behind it, it is becoming increasingly a major aspect if you will of the Thai Economy. A lot of investment has gone in to expanding the infrastructure down there; the port is down there; there are airport facilities; there is high a speed rail facilities that are all being constructed, in fact I think most of this is all complete. So just a lot of developments down in the EEC.

This I thought was noteworthy, a recent article from Thai PBS World, that is thaipbsworld.com, the article is titled: Thai Cabinet Approves Eastern Economic Corridor Free Trade Zone. Quoting directly "The Cabinet approved a proposal from the EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor) Policy Committee today (Tuesday) to upgrade the status of the EEC from a "Special Economic Zone” to a "Free Trade Zone", in which incentives, such as income tax breaks, further easing of employment restrictions for foreigners, VAT exemption for tourists buying goods there and permits for 24-hours of recreational activities and liquor sales will be granted to businesses in the area." Quoting further: "Other incentives include 24-hour liquor sales, 24-hour "recreational activities", a customs checkpoint for the import and export of liquor and tobacco, a tax-free Zone and a bonded warehouse."

So there is a lot going on down there. It is going to be very interesting to see what this precisely means in practical terms. Hard to say. I think in general, policy makers realize that people have to work and they also need to have time off. I would presume that in the context of things like the port as well as certain factory operations, manufacturing operations, there may be 24-hour workers and those workers may need to have a place to go have recreational activities in kind of non-traditional hours. That would seem to me to be maybe one of the reasons for this. Somebody else has commented and mentioned to me that maybe this has something to do with the ongoing discussion regarding the legalization of gambling in Thailand. It remains to be seen. There has certainly not been anything promulgated to that effect regarding casinos or gaming establishments that has me thinking that that is necessarily a foregone conclusion. That said, we will keep you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
