Alcohol Ban Dates for Upcoming Thai Election?
Transcript of the above video:
The title of this video is a bit of an awkward one. Basically what we're talking about here is the fact that alcohol is banned for a couple of days in the lead up to the forthcoming election on February the 8th here in Thailand.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from The Phuket News, that is thephuketnews.com, the article is titled: Alcohol sales banned nationwide for advance voting. Quoting directly: "A nationwide ban on the sale and distribution of alcohol will be enforced next weekend for advance voting in the February 8 national election." So this is the point. There are actually two days if you will, although it kind of traverses as calendar days, there are 2 days to be aware of here. It's not just one day February the 8th where alcohol sales are banned. There is another day for the advance voting. Quoting further: "Under election law, a 24-hour alcohol ban will apply from 6pm on Saturday, January 31 until 6pm on Sunday, February 1 for advance voting. Phuket Election Commission (ECT Phuket) Chief Orapin Achivasuk confirmed. The alcohol ban also will be in effect from 6pm on February 7 to 6pm on February 8 for the national election, she added. Both bans apply nationwide and cover all shops, bars, entertainment venues and service establishments, including popular nightlife areas such as Patong and Bangla Rd, Ms. Orapin said. Anyone found violating the ban faces up to one month in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht or both, she warned. Ms. Orapin stressed that the restrictions extend beyond commercial sales. Quote: "For both advance voting and the election, the sale distribution and dispensing of alcohol and beverages are prohibited. Celebrations involving drinking parties are also forbidden," she explained."
So again, Thailand does bans pertaining to alcohol for elections and as noted in that article, and again I urge those who are watching this video, go check out The Phuket News, that is thephuketnews.com for more information on that. But long story short and the thing to take away from this video, we are not only looking at a ban on from 6pm on January 31st until 6pm on the 1st of February, but also 6pm February 7 to 6pm February 8. My personal opinion is the advance voting stuff I don't really get why they are doing that but okay, it just sort of is what it is. And look, I understand and certainly as I've discussed in other videos, my better half and I set up a restaurant here in downtown Bangkok, Pancake Palace, but it also serves adult beverages in the evenings and things and so obviously this is going to have an impact on us. Nobody really loves these alcohol ban days but that said again, it's the law here in Thailand, so it's basically something we are going to have to deal with.
But again, the thing to remember is the overnight January 31 going into the 1st of February, as well as the overnight January, excuse me, February 7th going into February 8th up to 6 pm on the 8th. Again, we're going to see alcohol sales banned here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
