Another Look at Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, just for talking about Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor or EEC. We have discussed this at length in some other videos, basically three provinces down in well the sort of the southeastern part of Thailand, the provinces of Chonburi, Rayong and, Chachoengsao are currently part of this new created Eastern Economic Corridor. There is even a legal framework associated with this that was promulgated under an Act of Parliament here in Thailand and there are certain benefits that are associated with doing business in there, certain concessions that can be gained including tax holidays and things, of doing business within that Eastern Economic Corridor.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: The mixed legacy of General Prayut's nine years in power. The thrust of this article goes in a very different direction to what we're talking about. It is a rather interesting article and for those who haven't lived in Thailand over the course of time that we have seen General Prayut as the Prime Minister here, tt may be worth a read because it has been a mixed bag. I have been critical of this Government as you have seen on this channel if you have watched it for a while but there has been some good things that have come out of it, the Eastern Economic Corridor I would argue is one of them. Quoting directly: "Other positive features included the establishment of the Eastern Economic Corridor to create a high-tech and import-export hub in three central provinces (including Pattaya's Chonburi region) and Prayut's personal decision in 2015 to allow tourists from dozens of visa exempt countries to extend their initial 30-day stamp by a further month at local Immigration offices without needing to leave Thailand. History is never kind to coup makers for all the obvious reasons but Prayut's 9 years were not wholly negative."
Yeah interesting. Again, I urge those who are watching this video, read that article to get some insight in detail. But yes the Eastern Economic Corridor I think long-term especially, we are going to see a lot of trade benefits associated with that jurisdiction. And again as I have noted very similar to BOI, the Board of Investment, the EEC also has a body which can also grant certain trade concessions and certain business concessions somewhat similar although not necessarily exactly like the BOI. There can be a number of benefits associated with this that can be highly lucrative, can be a boon if you will to foreign businesses looking to come in and do business, especially in the high-tech sector, looking to come in and do business here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
