"Closing the Books" on a Thai Constitutional Amendment?
Transcript of the above video:
The thumbnail on this video is actually from the TV series The Sopranos which used to be on HBO back in the day. I'm a big fan of The Sopranos if you can't tell. I've used a couple of clips and memes and things from The Sopranos over the years on this channel. This one's a little bit more awkward of a comparison with stuff that's on the silver screen or the little screen if you're talking TV with regard to The Sopranos, but I do think it's worth pointing out because I don't think if you will expat land, really understands the gravity of this with regard to this Charter rewrite. This is a pretty big deal, and it seems they are trying to get it done in a pretty fast, efficient clip.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Charter debate approved for December 10 and 11. Quoting directly: "The Cabinet has approved a draft Royal Decree for a special Parliamentary session on December 10 and 11 to enable the completion of a Constitutional amendment by the end of this year. Under the Constitution, once second reading of a draft amendment has been completed, a 15-day interval is required before the third reading can take place, Government Spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said on Tuesday. If Parliament were to wait until the ordinary session resumes on December 12, the amendment process would not be concluded before the New Year as planned."
What this says to me and to sort of bring in the reference to The Sopranos, there's this scene - I'll put a link in the description below - where his sort of minion Christopher is kind of saying, "I need to become a member of the organized crime family", and he says, "hey they're not taking new members, the books are closed". And it was him saying "hey we're putting this to bed. This is the final thing; the books are closed. Stop worrying about it." That's kind of what I'm viewing both in the political prism as well it's like just the purely observer of legislative due process prism of what's going on here with regard to this amendment. There has been a lot of talk as to whether or not Anutin is being honest or sort of is being genuine in his desire to get this Charter done.
Whether or not he personally wants it, I don't know, but it looks to me like there has been a consensus reached in the halls of Parliament that this is going to get on the agenda. They are going to make these Charter changes in time and in line with having both the election regarding the next incoming Parliament, as well as effectively a referendum on the Constitution itself, and that they are serious about it. It looks to me like it's going to happen. I myself was even kind of, and I did videos in the moment a couple weeks ago, where I said I can see the argument where they are saying maybe it won't happen and Anutin can say well it didn't have anything to do with me; I went ahead and did my part. And look, remember, I think that there is a component of the amendment process that has to go through the Senate; again it remains to be seen what happens there. But it looks to me like at least in the Lower House everybody seems pretty serious about getting this Charter stuff completed in a timely manner so that it can be dealt with in this upcoming election cycle.
That being said, it remains to be seen exactly how all of this plays out, so we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
