Could Thai Same Sex Union Legislation Pass Before Elections?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the possibility of same-sex civil unions or same-sex marriage, same sex partnership, whatever you want to call it or LGBT, LGBTQI, whatever, just equality of marriage opportunity. Could legislation like that pass before the elections?
Hard to say. It has been kind of frustrating to watch the ebbs and flows of the movement to get LGBT marriage equality here in Thailand because we got close to it under the National Legislative Assembly and then it dissolved and we went into the current Parliament. Then we have had major movements behind at the very least same sex civil union as opposed to marriage. But same sex civil union or LGBT Civil Union, again I get it's not full equality and I understand people that are concerned about that but it does provide legal benefits and if something could get past in this legislative session that would allow benefits under Civil Unions for same-sex couples or LGBTQ partners I have to say we should take it, people should take that because any benefit is good. But I do get it; we have got to march on as they say until full quality is reached.
I would love to see it happen in this session and hopefully it will frankly. It seems like we've got weeks if not months left before any kind of snap election gets called. All that kind of remains to be seen. I'm not trying to get political, not the point of this but it came close at the end of the NLA, at the end of the National Legislative Assembly and then that body dissolved so hopefully it will happen before we run into snap elections in the upcoming months, probably into next year.
