Drunken Foreigners Run Into Thai "Street Justice"?
Transcript of the above video:
Unfortunately, this is another one of those “Foreigner Behaving Badly” videos and, in this instance, I am not certain exactly what has gone on. Let me just jump into it. That said, I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, the article is titled: Drunk Tourists beaten up after assault on woman in Phuket bar. Quoting directly: "Two foreign tourists were beaten unconscious by a group of Thai men after allegedly assaulting a local woman while intoxicated at a night spot in Phuket's Patong area. Many comments expressed support for the Thai men's actions, praising them for defending the woman. Others, however, raised to concerns about the use of violence and called for proper legal procedures to be followed. Local authorities have not released any information about the incident, including whether charges will be laid against those involved. The identities and nationalities of the tourists remain undisclosed."
So, yeah look, I urge those who are watching this video, go check out that article in detail. I don't know the details of what happened and for that reason, I don't want to draw conclusions about who was right, wrong or whatever. Suffice it to say, this is something I have commented a fair amount on - especially in a lot of these sort of Foreigners Behaving Badly videos - where we are talking about basically foreigners who come here and do things that quite honestly, they would never do anywhere else. For some reason they come to Thailand, and they think that it's either okay or that it's more permissive here or they can just get away with it, that they pull things that they wouldn't pull in other places, or back home if you will. Now again, I don't know the full story behind this but if foreigners assaulted a Thai woman, I can see where the locals got pretty upset about that. There's footage in the, I put a link in the description for the photo credit for the thumbnail. And you can see in the article, there is footage, it's blurred out but it's clear that it is very, very violent. I mean there was a violent reaction here. Was it warranted under the circumstances? I don't know. Again, I don't know the background.
That said, the reason for the video is more or less, not really to just sort of make a video about sort of gratuitous violence but to get into the notion that again, foreigners often come here, and I don't think they intentionally do it, they're just away from their home, they are away from their usual surroundings. Alcohol probably doesn't help - especially getting drunk - and they do things that they wouldn't do back home and as a result they can find themselves in very bad situations because this isn't home. Thailand has its own "street justice" sometimes and that "street justice" can be swift and brutal as you can see in the video. For this reason, those who are looking to come to Thailand to intentionally act in a nefarious manner, it may be a good idea to look for someplace else or just maybe discontinue thinking that way to begin with.
That said, the thing to take away from this video is you don't necessarily only need to worry about law enforcement here in Thailand, again there is "street justice". I put that in quotes because as noted in the article, there are concerns about the legality of the response, but I am not so sure the people that were beaten unconscious are really worrying about the nuances of the legality of the response, they are just in a bad way because they have been beaten.
The point I am trying to make is look if you are coming to Thailand and you just want to have a good time, great. But if you think that coming over here that folks here are some sort of soft touch or something, you can get away with things you might not have gotten away with back home, you might want to think again.
