Expat Small Restaurant Owners in Thailand, I Salute You!

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing expats small restaurant owners here in Thailand. The reason for this video, I haven't really discussed restaurants here in Thailand. We deal with a fair number of clients who are in the food and beverage business and a number of expats decide to go ahead and get into that business for a number of different reasons. I have got to say, I really admire folks that are in that business, it is a tough business, it is one of those things that I think everybody in the world thinks they could do it and when they try their hand at it realize "wow, it takes a specific kind of unique talent to be able to undertake that."

I actually thought of making this video off hand. I was watching, I'll go ahead and put a link in the description below, I was actually watching a video by a guy named Aaron Clary over in the United States who was talking about a horrible experience he had recently had at a Perkins Restaurant in the US, just lack of service, sort of lack of overall diligence in maintaining a decent restaurant experience basically. I have just returned from the United States. Viewers of this channel may not be aware of that because we pre-record a lot of stuff and we went ahead and did that so as to not cause any interruption to the overall content on this channel, but yeah I was over there and I was really kind of shocked at where service has gone in terms of the restaurant industry in the United States. I am not saying every place I went was actually horrible but there were some places where it was really readily apparent that service standards had fallen, I mean substantial levels. Now admittedly I may be specifically sensitive to this because I haven't been to the United States in the last 5 years but that said it was readily apparent. So long story short, I understand the restaurant business is difficult, the service sector is difficult in general but the reason I thought of making this video is I was watching that one and then I got to thinking, I was like yeah standards have fallen over there but I have got to say here in Thailand, standards have not fallen at all. And one thing I have got to say too, and shout out to G's Bangkok. I think I have mentioned them in prior videos. They are a German place G, my friend Guido he's a German guy, he has a restaurant over on Silom Soi 4; the Smoking Pug Barbecue over on Lang Suan. I have known these folks for years and we have assisted them from time and they have certainly assisted me in gaining weight from time to time. I have watched folks have to run a restaurant here in Thailand; it is not an easy endeavour and to maintain a high level of service is really admirable.

So again, as the title suggests "I salute you folks". It is not something easy to do and clearly in the United States it seems like the wheels may be falling off the wagon a little bit but over here in Thailand no, not so much. Small restaurants and I urge those who come to Thailand, go to small restaurants. I am not saying chains, there's anything wrong with them per se, but may be have a look at the smaller restaurants, the smaller venues when you are coming here to Thailand especially on vacation and even ex-pats that are out here. Support your local restaurants because it's not an easy job that they have and keeping up the level of service that many of the restaurants here in Thailand have that level, that threshold of service that they maintain, it's not an easy endeavour and clearly in the United States it is an endeavour that seems to be lacking on many fronts.
