The "Janus" of Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor?
Transcript of the above video:
The Janus of the Easton Economic Corridor? What are you talking about? Well I thought of making this video after eating a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Pattaya Prowl: Two Faced! Quoting directly: "Pattaya is now turning into what some call a Janus resort. You see what you want to see. If nightclubs, gin palaces and massage parlors are your thing, they are here in plenty. But moving along rapidly in parallel is the opening of more five-star condominiums and hotels, family entertainment venues and increasing numbers of events under the Mice (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) program. Napoleon was once asked in exile what the battle of Waterloo had been like. "Depends where you were standing," he replied.” Yeah interesting. Well put.
It is a good article. I urge those who are watching this video, go check out that article in detail. But yeah in a lot of ways and I think there is an element of this, they say Janus was the Two-Face God; January, is Janus is the root word of that because on the one hand you are looking back in the last year and you're looking forward into the new one, so the two-faced God. Also I believe in show business where they have the two masks, the one that is frowning and the one that is smiling, it is also representative of Janus. But for the purposes of this video, there's another kind of facet of this where Pattaya I think is going to end up being very much kind of the epicenter if you will of the Eastern Economic Corridor because you are going to probably have a lot of folks living there, may be having their businesses there or living in Pattaya and then commuting to places on an economic zone, special economic zone out in bonded areas whatever, warehouses, manufacturing hubs, all of this in the Eastern Corridor is really moving along in a brisk pace. Meanwhile people that are for example foreign nationals who are stationed in Thailand working in the EEC, Eastern Economic Corridor, very likely they will end up in the incorporated city of Pattaya although not necessarily a foregone conclusion and those folks could find themselves in a situation where they are looking for a more family-oriented kind of town and I can definitely see this writer's point when he says these things are kind of moving in parallel where at one time Pattaya was just kind of seen as a vacation resort that was sometimes bandied about as "Sin City"; Pattaya is a really big town. It is 20 square miles incorporated municipality and it is very different from sort of place to place where you go there. Then on top of that, the EEC is quite a big area so there is a lot going on there too.
Just something to keep in mind is this Eastern Economic Corridor I think is going to change things economically in that region of Thailand and then simultaneously we are seeing developments sort of in the tourism sector where we are going to see kind of an evolution in a different way than we have seen sort of the evolution of Pattaya in the past. I am not saying I am the end all be all on this, I am just saying I have watched over the years kind of the way things have evolved and we have seen things move into a sharply different direction the past few years and I think it's a positive direction overall. I think it is very good for Pattaya, I think it is very good for Thailand and it could be very good for folks looking to do business here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
