Smuggling a Concern in Thai Cannabis Industry?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the Cannabis industry here in Thailand. It has been a topic that has been on many people's minds especially those actually in the Industry. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from Insider, that's insider.com, the article is titled: Thailand legalized marijuana for the economic benefit but now Thai growers say they are being undercut by illegal US imports; and emphasis on illegal, I will get into that in a moment. Quoting directly: "Southeast Asia is famous for its harsh drug laws. So it was with great fanfare that Thailand's military-led government legalized marijuana last year. That goal has now run into two major obstacles: first is political deadlock in the country's Parliament which has so far failed to pass the regulatory framework to manage it all, a problem many US states can relate to. This has contributed to the second problem: weed farmers in Thailand told Al Jazeera that they are being undercut by cheaper marijuana smuggled into the country from the United States."
So yeah, apparently this is a concern and I can really understand why farmers as well as folks in the sector here in Thailand are concerned about it and that's because obviously there are competition issues associated with the local products. There are also issues associated with just the illegality of the foreign items concerned, the foreign contraband. Again this is in a situation that presently is somewhat nebulous insofar as there is no clear regulatory framework. That being said, and something to really understand here, Customs Law in Thailand has not changed and again as noted in the title of this article and the usage of the word smuggle, anything that is brought in illegally from abroad, that can face serious criminal consequences notwithstanding the changes to Thai Law on Cannabis within the Kingdom.
So something to understand and something to keep in mind with respect to this is on an ongoing basis, it remains to be seen what the regulatory structure will look like with regard to Thailand but rest assured I think it is fairly safe to presume that we are going to be looking at a sector if you will that will not be dissimilar to other sectors here in Thailand, for example agriculture especially. There is a lot of protectionism that is imposed and as a result it can be very difficult to the point of impossible to bring in foreign items to Thailand from time to time in any sector. So the thing to take away from this video and to understand is 1) again bringing this stuff in is illegal now. It stands to reason that even with a regular regulatory structure, it will likely be illegal in the future.
