Thai Supreme Court Rules Prayut Remains as PM

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing recent Supreme Court decision regarding Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. As noted in a prior video, yeah this was something I mean you couldn't really run a channel dealing with a lot of legal news without bringing this up. However, politics isn't something we really weighed into on this channel but this is one of those things where legality and politics kind of intersected.

I got to thinking of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, article is titled: Prayut's staying put.  I am going to quote a small excerpt from this. I urge those who are watching this video interested in this topic check out that article. Quoting directly: "As a result, General Prayut could potentially stay in office until 2025 provided he agrees to run for re-election by Parliament after the general election that is expected in the first half of next year. The Court decided his tenure started on April 6th, 2017, when the current charter was promulgated rather than when he assumed Office following the 2014 coup he orchestrated."

So yeah there were kind of three ways this could have come out and the Court looks like it kind of picked the middle way. I do understand the argument behind this. I am not going to get into my opinion one way or the other on it, it just is what it is as far as I am concerned. But yeah, it looks like we are going to be dealing with Prayut as Prime Minister for at least roughly the next two years unless something major happens in the next election. Presuming that doesn't occur, it looks like he will be serving until presumably April of 2025.

So I mean on one hand, again we don't really like wading into the political but on the other this is pretty big legal news here in Thailand. It's likely to have ramifications in many areas of policy across the board so we will certainly keep you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
