Thailand Pass, Travel Obstacles, and Monkey Pox, Oh My!

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing all manner of things here including Monkey Pox. My personal opinion on Monkey Pox is, I won't say it is "much ado about nothing" but I definitely think we are probably making it a bigger deal than it really is at a really fundamental level.

The reason for the video, I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Thai Examiner that is thethaiexaminer.com, the article is titled: Thailand Pass to be used in Monkey pox screening at airports with new RT-PCR test for the disease. "Thailand puts itself on alert for Monkey Pox. Officials underline that there is no need for the public to panic at this time as the Ministry of Public Health begins screening for the disease which has not yet been declared a threat under the Communicable Diseases Act 2015." That doesn't make a lot of sense. So we are screening for it even though it hasn't been declared a threat? Quoting further: "But is being treated as one of interest that warrants further investigation." Well what does that mean? The verbiage with this stuff is weird. Quoting further: "Thai Authorities are ramping up a screening process for the Monkey Pox disease in respect of foreign tourists using an RT-PCR test which is in production together with incoming passenger declarations which will be coordinated through the country's Thailand Pass online registration regime for foreign travelers. Visitors from Spain, the United Kingdom and Portugal are particularly to be examined by officials at the Ministry of Public Health in response to advice from World Health Organization, WHO to enhance screening and surveillance against any possible threat posed by a new variation of the disease which in the last week has been detected in up to 20 countries where it was never endemic before." Well, the question is, is it really endemic now or is it just sort of an anomaly? And I don't know the answer to that.

Yeah just some of this is kind of weird to read because almost the phraseology doesn't make a lot of sense. I do understand that the Public Health Ministry does have an obligation to worry about the public health in Thailand and I am glad that they are doing that but I do wonder if this is overly necessary considering the underlying facts of the situation. I also think maybe we should worry more about getting our tourism sector back up and going and our economy back up and going rather than worrying about whatever “flavour of the month medical hysteria” just put pops up on any given basis.
