Weak Baht, Strong Dollar, and Thai Gold?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the Thai Baht, the US Dollar and Thai Gold. I have had people contact me, we talk about Thai Gold every now and then. For those who are unaware, Thai Gold has a specific weight and measure which is different from the International weight and measure standard of gold which is traded on the international level. So Thai Gold kind of has its own standard if you will I guess. Here in Thailand there is a substantial number of gold shops which buy and sell Thai Gold on a daily basis; they are part of the Thai Gold Traders Association. A lot of interesting things associated with Thai Gold especially for those who are kind of enthusiasts in Gold generally. Thai Gold is just kind of an interesting rivulet of the Gold world, sort of subset of overall gold.

I have had a lot of folks ask me "Do I think that a weak Thai Baht strong Thai Dollar is having dramatic impact on Thai Gold?" Let me be clear, I am just a lay person here. I don't have any major insight with respect to this but one thing that I think is relevant is the fact that the US Dollar can buy Thai Gold directly. So we talked about this in a prior video that there was news, going back a couple of years ago, that they were radically well not radically, but they were changing some aspects of the currency conversion and it would be possible to buy Thai Gold directly with Dollars. Again, circumstantially dependent. There's a lot of different aspects at play; I don't think you are going to be able to buy Thai Gold just on the street level at a Thai Gold shop using dollars, they are going to want to see Baht there. But things like contracts, futures and things for Thai Gold, yeah it might be possible to do that in a transaction denominated in US dollar currency.

So again, that kind of leads me to believe that really the relationship between the Baht and the Dollar might not be quite as relevant as people think it is with respect to how that plays to the Thai Gold price because at the end of the day, you can exchange either currency for Thai Gold and so it kind of negates the difference, I would think, I would think. Again, this is kind of an exercise in speculation but one would think it would kind of negate the differential in terms of the two currencies.
