Viewer Q&A on Gold in Thailand

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well this is kind of a viewer Q&A. About a week ago I asked folks what they would like me to talk about in a video and I got some responses. Some of them were nicer than others. This one was quite a nice response. This person basically shot back a comment on that video that said "More gold videos like tax implications, flying in and out, gold coins and bars. Thanks."

Well as we have discussed in another video on this channel, actually multiple other videos on this channel, Thai Gold, Baht weight gold, 96.5 Baht weight gold and, please I am not going to get into a full breakdown of what Baht weight is and why 96.5 and all of that. We have done other videos on this channel discussing weights and measures specifically on the issue of Thai Gold. Thailand does have its own weight and measure of gold here in Thailand and the Thai Gold Traders Association and the Thai gold shops associated with that Association do operate utilizing that weight and measure. So again you can go into the search function in our channel and just type in Thai gold. You will basically get everything I have talked about on that topic with regard to weights and measures.

So as discussed previously, Thai gold is VAT exempt so effectively except for the service fees associated with the seller of the gold, if you are buying for example not bullion, you are buying crafted Thai gold jewellery and things, there maybe tax associated with the service fee but on the gold itself, there isn't any tax to speak of that I am aware of especially not VAT. Now meanwhile, I don't know, there may be circumstances that I don't even want to really get into where you can be talking about long-term I don't know capital gains whatever you want to call that, I think that is way beyond not only the bailiwick of this channel but frankly beyond my capability to even speak on it. But long story short, in just kind of a transactional capacity, a thing to keep in mind and a real benefit which is associated with Thai gold, it is not subject to VAT here in Thailand and many other goods are.

With respect to moving in and out of Thailand, flying in and out of Thailand, I think that was another, gold coins and bars again. Well coming out of Thailand with Thai gold I don't think you are probably going to have a great deal of an issue on that especially jewellery and things of this nature. I have never heard of that being a real problem. Now if you have a suitcase filled entirely with gold bars yeah probably Customs is going to have some questions as to what is going on there. Now when it comes to coins, numismatics may be an issue especially with regard to Customs because they may have a face value and when you are dealing with face value and Customs and things of that nature, you could end up having to make a declaration. But again worst case scenario and I would see would be that you just need to declare it when you are dealing with it.

So again travelling with gold, I don't want to talk about this in a cavalier manner. Different places are going to have very different policies and there are going to be places you probably just don't want to travel into with a great deal of gold for a variety of different reasons depending on the different jurisdictions. As far as it goes here in Thailand though, I have never really heard of any major issues associated with people coming in and out with what I would say are reasonable amounts of gold, specifically Thai gold especially here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
