Thai-Khmer Border Barrier Building to Begin "Next Month"?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the Border Barrier being built here in Thailand. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Thailand to start building Cambodia border fences next month. Quoting directly: "Thailand will start building fences along a portion of its border with Cambodia next month to boost security after deadly clashes between the countries erupted last year following longstanding tensions. The first barrier will cover 1.3 km in Pong Nam Ron District of Chanthaburi province, according to Maj Gen Vithai Laithomya, spokesman for the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters. The fencing off of the area -- a small part of the nearly 800 km border between the two nations -- is not part of a territorial dispute and has Cambodia's approval, he said. Quote: "The construction of this border fence is not just about building a physical wall, but also about providing peace of mind to the people living along the border," Maj Gen Vithai said in a statement." Quoting further: "The fence will take 45 days to build, he said. The territory has been cleared of landmines, and a paved road has been constructed on the Thai side of the Border, Maj Gen Vithai said. Details of the fence project were released late last year after the first of two Border clashes. In October, the Thai military had presented its blueprint to her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn, who offered to help find the project through her foundation. The Princess' Hataitip Fund said in late October it had received more than 200 million Baht from public donations for the effort. The princess gave the Thai military 121 million Baht in December to fund its first phase."
As I have noted in other videos, there's been a major paradigm shift here in Thailand with regard to immigration. We've seen it in the past, where there was a paradigm shift that shifted the thinking from an administrative function to more of a law enforcement function. Now it has been even heightened especially in matters pertaining to the Thai-Cambodian border to a matter of National Security. As a result, clearly there is significant national will behind the idea of getting this border wall built, as you can see from all the funding that has gone into it and now we are seeing concrete steps being taken, and I mean no pun intended, we are seeing it actually being built in real time and I expect there will probably be a great deal of alacrity associated with this.
So it'll be interesting to watch. I expect you know this will change the landscape of any possibility in the future of things like border runs, so we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as this situation evolves.
