Is Thailand "Beset on All Sides"?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well we are discussing the situation in Thailand at the moment. And I decided to use as a thumbnail, it is Samuel L. Jackson from the movie Pulp Fiction. I thought of making this video, I was on YouTube and I was just kind of scrolling through - I was watching a video - and then I saw one of the videos sort of on the sidebar that was there as a possible link to check out, and they were talking about possible issues along the Thai-Malaysian Border and then a couple of days ago, I saw something about issues along the Thai-Myanmar Border, and then I saw an article, not so much issues along the border with Laos, but there was a recent article talking about oil transshipment through border checkpoints there that they are sort of tightening up rules and scrutiny associated with outbound, certain shipments, certain energy commodities and things going into Laos, and then of course we have the situation, the very serious and deadly situation only the Eastern border with Cambodia. It just got me to thinking, is Thailand beset on all sides? And I thought of that scene from Pulp Fiction, link in the description below, but I'll try to recite from memory the scene where Samuel L. Jackson quotes from what he says is Ezekiel 25:17 in the Bible: "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men." If I'm not misquoting, I think I'll get the quote right: "Blessed is he who in the name of Charity and Goodwill shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness for He is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon you with great vengeance and furious anger, they that attempt to poison and destroy my brothers and you will know my name as the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you." And it's a scene in that movie. You can go check it out for yourselves.
But I bring it up because I don't know what's going on in the rest of the world, especially amongst those who Thailand I think has counted as allies over the years especially in the West, with regard to how Thailand's being treated at the moment. Really one, sitting here in Bangkok, I don't mean to express a paranoid or even a negative vibe, but it does sort of feel like Thailand is beset on all sides - not a terrible quote, I think that's why I brought it up - and my attitude toward that, as a naturalized Thai, is 'whatever'. Thailand has always stood alone. If you're going to keep poking at us and hitting at us and throwing ordnance over our border and killing our civilians, then we will strike down upon you with great vengeance and furious anger. And it's not going to be pleasant.
The Thais are a very kind people and they get along, and they go along as much as they possibly can, until they can't and it's in the national anthem here: "we don't want to fight but we will if we need to". And that's where we are here in Thailand at the moment and I think her allies, especially those who want to continue to maintain influence in the Southeast Asia region, would be wise to remember that and understand what the current paradigm is here in Thailand because I think everybody is at their wits end of putting up with the machinations of not only some of the neighbours here that think that they can just kind of push things around and not have any consequences for it, but also actors if you will, state actors and otherwise, who are even further afield, who seem to think that this is, I don't know, some sort of opportunity to take advantage of Thailand? Not smart.
If you're not reading the geo-political tea leaves, let me give you a basic primer of what's going on here. The West is falling, the East is rising and Thailand is the one country in the East that held out against anything. So if you folks out there think that Thailand is going to be a pushover for a bunch of PR, propaganda and nonsense, you have got another thing coming because you talk about people that can hold their own lines, there isn't anybody better at it than the Thais.
