Is 50 Too Young for Thai Retirement Visas?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well Thai Retirement Visas again. We are discussing the issue of whether 50 years old is too young for a Thai Retirement Visa. I thought of making this video after reading a recent comment on our channel, quote: "Is years 50 years old, too low to retire and get a Retirement Visa? How many people at 50 get a pension? Any thoughts?" Well I really need to do a deep dive, because I believe during the '90s mid to late, early to mid-90s, somewhere in there, the retirement age associated with Retirement Visas went from 60 down to 50. Now I have heard a million things associated with this; I have kind of heard conjecture and rumour sort of in the expat world, sitting around in cafés or at a bar or something, you are talking to some guy that is from the old days. I want to be clear in this video, I am very curious to see in the comments if there is any old hands that can tell me about how things transpired with respect to the evolution of the Thai Retirement Visa during the 90s, I would be very, very keen to hear that.
Long story short, it's my understanding that they dropped the age requirement primarily because they wanted to encourage more people to come to Thailand and use the Retirement Visa and thereby indirectly increase the amount of Foreign Exchange flowing into Thailand sort of akin to encouraging tourists, it's encouraging retirees and thereby bringing their money into the country. If you drop the requirement by 10 years, I don't remember if it was 55 or 60, when it was in the old days. I think it was 60 and went down to 50 or went to 55 first and then went to 50. Again old hands out there, if you know how that went down, I will be checking things out in the comments and again I will do a deep dive and I will try to do a video later on how this kind of came to be. But long story short, I think, my personal opinion and again it's just kind of based on an educated guess, but yeah I think it has primarily gone down to 50 for a Retirement Visa because they want to go ahead and encourage as many people as they can to come in and retire in Thailand and again thereby sort of indirectly benefit by way of the foreign exchange that comes into Thailand and is spent here in the Kingdom.
