Are Female Tourists to Thailand Changing the Sector?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are asking the question, are female tourists in Thailand changing the overall tourism sector? The overall landscape? I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Pattaya MP will campaign for a 24 hours party city. Quoting directly: "Immigration data shows that Thailand has welcomed around 10 million foreign tourists in 2023 so far but the vast majority have been Indians, Chinese, Malaysians and Russians. Another factor," (and I thought this was really interesting but) quote: "another factor is that almost half the arrivals have been tourist women, a fact which erodes the quaint notion that Pattaya caters mainly to men on personal night owl crusades."

That was really interesting to me and this could be something that's kind of a game changer. Foreign women here in Thailand have not been a major; let's be clear, tourists yes of course. Couples come to Thailand all the time, it's a great honeymoon destination, of that there is no doubt. But I think what the point of this article is, is that when half of the foreign arrivals are women okay a certain segment of that are probably couples where you are looking at 50/50 but overall there are a lot of single men coming to Thailand so if half the overall entrants are female then that would seem to be offset from when you think about all the single men coming in. So interesting. I find it interesting to see how this could change the demographics of tourism in Thailand long term. Meanwhile, even the demographics possibly of the expat community, that will be interesting to see as well.

I remember an old timer friend of mine who lived over in Phnom Penh for years and years used to say "you know, when the white girls show up, you know you don't have to worry about violence in the streets." And I said really? And he said, "Yup, they all seem to," he described it as being something akin to like how cattle know when bad weather is coming, they just seem to kind of group together. If you know cattle, they know a storm is coming, they kind of group together. He told me, he said, "when the white girls all start leaving Phnom Penh, I know something's going down. It is like they have a sixth sense for knowing that something is going down.”

So yeah, I don't know if there is anything to that. That may be apropos of nothing but long story short, it will be interesting to see if an influx of female tourists and possibly female expats will have an impact on the demography of the expat population here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
