Are There Advantages to Thai Citizenship?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai citizenship, nationality, Thai nationality. For those who are unaware, yes it is possible to naturalize to Thai citizenship. I have done it myself; there are a few other people I know that have done it themselves. We have also assisted a number of clients in becoming Thai Nationals. No it is not overly easy, that's the next question most folks ask. No, it is quite a process; it is quite prolonged; it has got a lot of requirements associated with it. One does not become a Thai particularly lightly. It is not an overly easy endeavour I guess is the way to look at it.

Now the reason I am making this video is we made a video some time ago, we were kind of asking viewers’ questions, what would you like to know and we got this one. I am going to go ahead and quote this comment from a prior video. Quoting directly: "Could you do a couple of videos on the requirements to become a Thai citizen and or nationalized? (I think they mean naturalized) I think you have done that. Why? Advantages?" Well, a couple of things. The process, it is going to differ different for everybody. The process of becoming a Thai National is very different from case to case. It's going to depend on how one became a resident in Thailand and then some personal details, underlying circumstances. So getting into the nuts and bolts of how that works it's going to kind of be counterproductive because what would work in one case is definitely not going to work in another one. So probably best for those out there who may want to apply for nationality, probably a good idea to contact a Thai legal professional, gain some insight and guidance into how best to proceed.

That said, advantages. What are the advantages? Well let me count the ways. I mean there's a number of advantages being Thai, most notably I don't deal with a Visa anymore and yeah okay Permanent Residents don't have to deal with Visas per se but believe me being Thai and never having to deal with the Immigration apparatus at all ever again, it is pretty nice. Next thing no foreign ownership requirements associated with corporate ownership in Thailand. So things like the Foreign Business Act do not apply to Thais. If they wish to do business, either sole proprietorship or partnerships, limited companies etc., Thais can do business in a pretty unfettered manner here in Thailand. Then another big one, yeah land ownership. If you are a Thai National you can own land in Thailand; again a big difference between a foreign National and a Thai National, land ownership. These are just a few to name just literally the few that I have gotten used to over my time here. Eventually, things like voting and franchisement, things of that nature also come part and parcel with Thai nationality. But again this is going to differ a little bit from person to person in terms of one how actually obtains Thai citizenship.
