Can I Receive My Social Security Benefits in Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Social Security benefits here in Thailand. This is kind of one of those videos that is going to be more tilted toward an American perspective. We are talking about the American Social Security System here. I thought of making this video when I read a recent comment on our channel, quoting directly: "Will I still be able to get my Social Security benefits from the US while living in Thailand on a permanent basis?" The answer to that question is "Yeah". I know plenty of folks that have their Social Security benefits sent to them to a Thai Bank Account here in Thailand.
Now there are certain provisions associated foreign bank accounts receiving Social Security Benefits. Most notably the big one that I have seen in my experience is in order to get the money out of the account, the actual physical person who has that account has to physically go to a teller at a physical bank branch to withdraw the money. This is a security protocol that is associated with trying to mitigate against people basically who are entitled the benefits who pass away overseas, somebody not sort of taking their place and just accruing their benefits, taking their money essentially while they are already gone. This has happened before and that is why this sort of fraud prevention initiative has been put in place.
But the long story short and answer to the question, yes, it definitely is possible to collect Social Security benefits here in Thailand and you will have to go ahead and set up a special type of bank account in order to receive those benefits but it is indeed very much possible to collect those benefits here in the Kingdom.
