Could Trump's Immigration Policy Impact the Destination Thailand Visa?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Trump's Travel Ban, Travel Policy, Travel Pause. I have discussed in many other videos made contemporaneously with this one all the ramifications of this; I've gone through this in other videos. Folks who watch this channel might be a little tired of my analysis on this, but I felt like a deep dive was definitely warranted. My clients as well that we do US Immigration work for, yeah, it's a salient point to bring up for them because they need to know how this impacts them. So I have gone into great detail with respect to that.
For this video though, I think it's reasonable to posit that look these Visa Policies, people kind of forget, going back into the end of the Obama Administration leading into the first Trump Administration, there was a lot of tit for tat back and forth, like visas being revoked, Visa policies being put into effect regarding Russian nationals, again going back like 10 years ago, yeah about that 10 years ago that we actually saw tit for tat policies being made between Russia and the United States.
My question posed in this video is look, we have just recently seen this Destination Thailand Visa roll out; I've done videos on it. I have my serious issues with it for a variety of different reasons most notably I don't think it's good for Thailand to just be letting in all these people without any ostensible reasons as to why they are here. They don't work; they're not paying any taxes into the system, and they're not work authorized for Thailand, so what is the purpose of this? And especially with the duration it has. If it was issued with a year validity, even two years validity, okay fine. But five years. People coming in for no particular reason that aren't going to work or really contribute, is that good policy? And I brought up in many other videos why I think it's not and how I think it ultimately came to pass - mostly because it was being used to sort of bolster Paetongtarn Shinawatra's résumé as she was coming into the Premiership here in Thailand, but we saw the way that that ended.
In any event, the point I am making with this video is look, I think we could start seeing some real tit for tat back and forth visa policies being made. The Foreign Minister here in Thailand is taking a wait and see approach as of the time of this video with regard to this. But that being said, it remains to be seen how it plays out. And I have got to be honest with you, if I was sitting in a policy making, decision maker's seat with regard to the issue of the DTV, in light of the fact that one, there was no consensus from the Interior Ministry regarding the DTV to begin with, it was entirely the brainchild of the Foreign Ministry, which at the time was controlled by the Pheu Thai faction of that particular Government, subsequently remained over their control during what I called the Rump Coalition Government and then now they have fallen out and they are no longer in the Foreign Ministry but I could see in the aftermath of this election, especially in light of if these Visa Policies stay as stringent as they are with the United States, then maybe Thailand starts to reconsider its Visa apologies regarding the United States and therefore maybe even more broadly as well, couple that with the fact that the birth of the DTV was very shady to say the least, and it's reasoning and all of its parameters are opaque at best, I think that rethinking of the entire policy associated with that Visa is probably going to happen one way or the other.
In light of all this stuff happening with Trump I can't dismiss out of hand the notion that Mr. Trump's policy might have an impact in the policy thinking regarding Immigration generally here in Thailand and possibly and I think even maybe to the point of probably, the Destination Thailand Visa as well.
