Does Permanent Residence In Thailand Impact Banking?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Permanent Residence in the context of banking. So for those who are unaware, yes it is possible to become a Lawful Permanent Resident here in Thailand. To be clear, this is different from so-called Residence as sort of colloquially discussed in the ether of the internet. So again, Tax Residency has a specific definition as does, for example now they have this Long-Term Residence Visa which not to be a broken record but I have done a number of videos on this, it's not the same as Permanent Residence in Thailand, it's a different thing. They are not the same thing. LTR Visas are like a long stay Visa. We are talking about Permanent Residence in Thailand.

Now I thought of making this video, actually this resulted from a rather deep dive that came from a comment on one of our prior videos which said "Hey bank accounts in Thailand aren't insured." which isn't strictly speaking the case. I thought of making this video then after reading the website of the Deposit Protection Agency, that web address is dpa.or.th and quoting directly: "Foreigners with Thai Bank Deposit Accounts at member financial institutions in Thailand are also protected under the Deposit Protection Agency Act. However, "Non-resident Baht Accounts" as defined in the Exchange Control Act B E. 2485 (1942) are not protected." Then they go down further and they say: "A Non-resident Baht Account" is a special type of deposit account denominated in Thai Baht that is used solely for transactions as specified in the Exchange Control Act. A Non-resident means: Natural persons not of Thai nationalities and not having alien Identity or residence permit."

So again, it specifically delineates Residence Permits so that is Permanent Residence, your red book if you will, and your documentation pertaining to your residence here in Thailand would allow one to avail themselves, based on what I am reading from this website, would allow one to avail themselves of insurance protections associated with banking here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
