Foreign Student Visa Crackdown in Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing a major crackdown on student visas here in Thailand; and let's just jump into this. Quoting directly from a recent article in the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Crackdown on student visa abuse continues. "The Immigration Bureau has intensified its scrutiny on foreign nationals entering the country on student visas, following the discovery that thousands had obtained visas without studying to earn them. Police Maj. Gen. Panthana Nuchanart, the Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau, said recent investigations by his staff found several thousand individuals had entered the country under the guise of education but failed to attend classes."
Yeah, a big upshot of this it looks like is they are going to be monitoring attendance; I have talked about this in other videos made contemporaneously with this one. Quoting further: "If someone enters Thailand on a Student Visa but doesn't actually study, it is standard procedure to revoke that visa," he said. Any student found not genuinely enrolled will face immediate cancellation of their visa status, he said." As discussed in another video, it looks as though they have already cancelled 10,000 visas to date in this particular category.
Now look, I have discussed this in other videos. There's a through line of this theme that goes all the way back to the Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn Administration at Thai Immigration wherein Student Visas have always been looked on a bit leerily if you will by the immigration establishment here in Thailand if you will, the Immigration Bureau, because it has been viewed as being overly abused over the years by folks who are just doing things, going through the motions if you will, basically using education as a pretext to remain in Thailand, and even in some cases just outright fraud where people really aren't attending anything, they are just getting a Visa.
That said, exactly how this is going to play out remains to be seen, but we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
