Free Flights for Foreign Tourists in Thailand?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, it appears there are going to be free flights for foreign tourists in Thailand. What are we talking about?

Well quoting directly from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com: Thailand offers free domestic flights for 200,000 foreign arrivals. Quoting directly: "The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to offer free domestic flight tickets to 200,000 foreign arrivals to boost tourism nationwide over a three-month period. The Ministry expects the giveaway to generate 8.8 billion baht in revenue from a budget of 700 million baht, but it still needs Cabinet approval. Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong said the campaign was themed "Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights", - okay, kind of a long promo there, but whatever - "and would encourage foreign tourists to visit secondary destinations."

I have got to be honest with you, credit where credit is due. I think this is good idea. I think it it helps boost tourism to again secondary destination places that aren't necessarily on the kind of what we used to call the Lonely Planet Guide beaten path and gets people to go to some places that they might not otherwise go to it when coming to Thailand. I think it could be a major benefit for some 200,000 tourists; something that may actually spur tourism so good on you Tourism and Sports Ministry; this was in my mind a good idea, and I think many tourists who might want to come to Thailand could benefit from this.

We are kind of looking down the barrel, based on what looks to me like to be not the greatest economic time globally both out here in Asia as well as in the West and North America and we are kind of looking down the barrel of what could possibly be a less-than-optimal high season. That said, I am still optimistic, and we may ultimately see things change especially if the political situation changes here in Thailand and coming weeks.

That being said, it remains to be seen how many people avail themselves of these free flights domestically here in Thailand, but we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
