How Do I Get a Thai Work Permit?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are asking the question, 'how do I get a Work Permit in Thailand?' Well, again in the past, there really was only one type of Work Authorization; we have done numerous videos over the years about standard Work Permits as I have I discussed. Generally speaking, a standard Work Permit is obtained after gaining a Business Visa, setting up a corporation here in Thailand, meeting all the appropriate criteria, and then going ahead and applying for Work Authorization. As I have discussed in other videos, foreigners are not automatically work authorized here in the Kingdom.
Things have changed with regard to work authorization lately. There are some visas, for example the Smart Visa has work authorization embedded in it. The BOI claims that the LTR Visa has work authorization, the Long Term Resident Visa. I don't get how they can make that claim when they don't have authorization to grant work authorization based on anything I've ever seen. I've never seen where BOI can issue work authorization. I get visas, but work authorization is a different thing. That said, they claim the LTR does it. I have never seen any legal basis in fact for that, and some of the visa don't have Work Authorization. If you are really looking at working in Thailand, LTR may or may not be optimal so you may want to contact a legal professional about that specifically. Meanwhile, there may be other options, things like the Elite Visa but again that is not work authorized inherently. Standard Thai Retirement Visas are not work authorized as well. O Marriage Visas can act as a platform for a Work Permit if you have a corporate sponsor, so depending on the circumstances, O Marriage Visas could sponsor a Work Permit as well. How do you get one though? Generally speaking, the old school way of doing it was to get a Business Visa, set up a company and then get a Work Permit. There may be other ways now to gain Work Authorization here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
For those who are somewhat confused or overwhelmed by all of this, it may not be a terrible idea to contact a legal professional, gain some insight and guidance into how best to proceed.
