"Hurry Up and Wait" in the Thai Permanent Residence Process?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai Permanent Residence. So to be clear, we are not discussing Thai Long-Term Residence Visas, the so-called LTR Visa, we are not discussing that. Those are not actually Residence Visas it is a 10 year visa and even then it is actually kind of a five and five visa and there is a lot of scrutiny and things. I have done a number of videos on that, not what we are talking about here. We are talking about true Permanent Residence, residency in Thailand, Thai PR.
Why are we talking "hurry up and wait"? Because that is kind of how the process goes. And we are kind of in a hurry up period here at the firm right now. We have got a number of cases we are filing on behalf of clients because the so-called "window" is open. The Permanent Residence Window tends to open in the fourth quarter of each year here in Thailand. You never know quite when it is going to open, it opens on a different date every year. It kind of depends on internal sort of logistical issues with respect to the Immigration apparatus and so you never quite know exactly when they are going to open it; one year they actually opened it in January the following year due to there were some government issues going on at the time.
So what are we talking about with "hurry up and wait"? Well, we are in a hurry up moment right now. We have been assisting many of our clients in compiling their cases over the past few months, and understand if you are watching this video and you say "hey I might qualify for PR". It's November and the window closes at the end of December. I am not saying it's impossible to put together a PR application package. It is pretty darn hard and you are running up against a hard deadline, so maybe contact us if you are interested in it but understand, what you are probably going to hear is "hey we're probably going to be applying next year, because there's a lot that goes into putting together one of these packages.” It usually takes weeks if not months. In some cases it takes a number of months for our Attorneys here at the firm to go ahead and put together a PR application.
Now that stated, once it is in, once the application is filed, that's kind of where you get into the waiting part. You put together this whole phone book size package, get it in to the Immigration apparatus and then you are just kind of sitting around waiting for them to contact you to deal with whatever the next steps are. And there are various processes in the PR process, various interviews, there is also documentation requirements and then you have got to show up at various Government agencies to pick up relevant documentation as the process goes along. So it is kind of protracted but it very much has a "hurry up and wait" element to it because there will be long periods of time and by long periods I mean weeks and months, not years necessarily, at least not in any of our cases right now, but you will have a prolonged period of time just sitting around waiting and then it will be a flurry of activity where you have to deal with a bunch of things and then you kind of revert back to just sitting around waiting again until finally you are issued your PR here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
