Issues with Wise and Banking in Thailand?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are talking yet again about banking here in Thailand unfortunately. I thought of making this video, actually I made a prior video based on the email a viewer sent regarding banking issues in Thailand and talking about facial scanning associated with being able to transfer more than 50,000 baht at a clip, and whether or not it is even going to be possible to do digital transfers at 50,000 baht using one's phone. On top of all the other problems and headaches that have come about, frankly only recently, and I personally think it is a result of all of this nonsensical OECD policy that is being pushed by the present government. Hopefully that may change in coming weeks but that remains to be seen. But long story short, another issue regarding banking.

Again I thought of making this video after reading a recent email from a viewer, quoting directly: "Also interesting is the huge swathe of Thai banks that are now not even allowed to receive Forex transfers via Wise (and I assume similar things like Revolut) since May this year. And he pointed to this email or pointed to and hats off to the emailer, thank you for that, pointed to wise.com, going over here to wise.com, under Help/articles. "Starting May 6 2025, the following banks will no longer be supported due to payment system upgrades in Thailand:" I love the term "upgrade". I love how the service gets worse as they upgrade; it's just really ridiculous. That said:

TMBThanachart Bank

Citibank

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation

Standard Chartered Bank

United Overseas Bank (that is UOB)

The Government Savings Bank

HSBC

Deutsche Bank

The Government Housing Bank

Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives

Mizuho Corporate Bank

BNP Paribas

Bank of China

Thanachart Bank

Islamic Bank of Thailand

TISCO Bank

ICBC

The Thai Credit Retail Bank

Land and Houses Retail Bank

Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank (Thai) PCL

And then the banks that are supported, so the banks you can use with Wise apparently still:

Bangkok Bank Public Company

Kasikorn Bank

Krung Thai Bank

Siam Commercial Bank

CIMB Thai Bank

Bank of Ayudhya (also known as Krungsri) and

Kiatnakin Phatra Bank

So those are the ones that are supported versus the ones that are not supported.

Yeah, again a lot of news in the banking sector here in Thailand that is having a lot of implications for foreigners here in Thailand. Again, I have said it before and I'll say it again, I think all of this is bad policy. I think at the end of the day this is going to accrue not to the benefit of Thailand overall or her economy. I think this is just more strangling frankly from undue foreign influence in the Thai Banking System and therefore indirectly upon the Thai economy. I'm really hoping that lawmakers and policy makers here in Thailand see the error of these ways and we start to see these reverse hopefully in the coming weeks and months.

That said it remains to be seen whether or not this will happen, but we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
