Is It Safe to Visit Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we're discussing whether or not it's safe to visit Thailand at this point. I thought of making this video after reading a recent well actually, after reading a recent comment on our channel, quoting directly: "What about safety for tourists? Is it safe to visit Bangkok the next winter?"
Look honestly anybody that has ever been here, I was talking to some folks today, actually down at Pancake Palace, really was actually doing that, no plug intended but if you are interested in some American diner style food, come on down to Pancake Palace, downtown Bangkok, link's in the description below. We've got all day breakfast, we've got chilli bowls, cheeseburgers and buffalo wings, best in town, that's Pancake Palace, but that said I was talking to folks at Pancake Palace earlier and I was talking about how; I make these videos oftentimes and in them I will do analysis, and it looks like Thailand is worse than it is.
What I'm trying to say is like I am doing videos about little nitpickity problems with banking in the context of Retirement Visas for example, and then people kind of blow that out of proportion in a sense, because then they say, "oh it's just impossible to get a Retirement Visa". No, and I need to be maybe a little more circumspect in how I present this stuff because things in Thailand are pretty darn good okay. And one of the things I like about Thailand is yeah, I have been making a lot of really heavily critical videos of the current makeup of the current Government, and I'm still making them. I don't feel unsafe at all walking down the street or anything else. Thailand is a very safe country, in fact, it is one of the most civilized nations I've ever been in. One of my favourite sayings in Thai is the term "Kreng Jai", which loosely translated comes out to "civility" and the Thais pride themselves on their civility. Yeah, our politics is weird. The most analogous state in the US to Thailand in my opinion is Louisiana. I mean geographically, there are demographic similarities, but the politics is very similar as well. People outside Louisiana do not understand how Louisiana politics works, and you know what? Louisiana doesn't care. It's the same way as Thailand. Thailand's politics just works the way it works; there's upheaval, there are all these differing factions, and they align and realign and first they are friends and then they are enemies, and they are opponents, and they are this, that and the other thing. It's a little crazy to the outsider, but is it unsafe? No. I mean I have been here in my opinion, about the most unsafe time that has probably been around in 20 years, and I highly doubt that is ever going to happen again. I definitely know residents in Bangkok don't want to see it again, but even then, did I really feel that unsafe? No and outside of the zones where it was really bad, it was quite safe.
Right now, Thailand is fine. Yeah, there's this weird political stuff going on in the background, and yeah, I am going to keep talking about it, but am I worried about my safety, my own and I'm the one that's talking about this stuff, I am not worried about anything. Folks coming over here should not be worried about safety in Thailand. Yeah, we have got some crazy politics; yeah it will probably, this, that and the other thing could happen over here from time to time. Do folks who are tourists need to worry? No, and in fact I think Thais, it would be like a national shame if tourists were injured or something as a result of the craziness of Thai politics. It's just not something that is frankly going to happen. Anybody that has ever been over here and spent any time in Thailand knows the general demeanour of people is not such that it's conducive to that kind of environment. So long story short, no, I would not worry about my safety as a tourist here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
