"People with DTVs Pulled Aside on Re-Entry" to Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
At the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the Destination Thailand Visa or DTV; we have talked about this Visa in the past. Look, I have had my issues with it and I think they are warranted. I think people think I have some personal problem with the DTV or people that use it. I don't. That's not my purpose. I can disagree with the policy and have no problem with people that are utilizing whatever the underlying thing is.
That being said, this is immigration, so I am going to continue to discuss it. I got this in an email from a viewer, and it actually ended up taking me over to this Reddit which is apparently posting something from Facebook but over on Reddit. It's under: People with DTVs pulled aside on re-entry at Chiang Mai Airport? Quoting directly: "Has anyone here landed at Chiang Mai Airport today with a DTV Visa? I saw a fellow's post saying that today at the CNX airport, all the DTV holders were brought to a side table and checked the following:
- show money 20K baht
- return ticket
- hotel booking
- reason of their visit
It was also mentioned that they were also required to fill out a new arrival card. It sounds quite odd, and those questions were usually asked for Visa exempt or TR visa.
Yeah that was the standard protocol that existed with regard to standard Tourist Visa entrants or visa exemption entries in the past. And if you go back to right around about 2013 if I recall, that was a big watershed inflection point sort of moment where we saw bunch of people starting to get turned around and things for effectively living in Thailand on Tourist Visas and things. And because they couldn't ascertain money, and they thought people were working illegally in Thailand. That's a big concern to folks here in Thailand, is that people are working here illegally. And I am here to tell you it's a big concern on the DTV because quite honestly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs basically unilaterally created a Visa that is not particularly fit to purpose and I don't see how it's not readily apparent that work authorization issues were going to come up with that but here we are.
Now, that being said, what does it mean? I don't know exactly. But at least for now, it looks like there's some sort of extra scrutiny going on with respect to DTV Visas and DTV Visa holders, at least in Chiang Mai. We will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
