Retirement in Thailand: Hard and Soft Landings?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing retirement in Thailand. The sort of focus of this video is there seem to be two kinds of retirees that I have seen over the years here in Thailand. There are retirees that come in on what I call sort of a 'soft landing' for lack of a better term. They have sort of retired from a relatively long career; they may have a pension, they have some savings and they just want to make Thailand their new home and they are just looking to gently settle in for a nice retirement, just sort of ease their way out through their golden years and what not, have a good time, but relax; those folks have kind of ‘soft landing’.
What are the 'hard landings' with retirement? Well over the years I have seen folks come in to Thailand in a ‘hard landing’. They have had problems in other jurisdictions; their businesses may have had major issues in other jurisdictions; in a sense they may have gone bankrupt. They may have had real business failures; they may have had other personal failures, personal failures so much isn't an issue, I am talking about this in the context of financial, but yeah. The difference I have seen between those two retirees, the obvious insight here is you prefer a soft landing, you would prefer to come in to Thailand and retire financially better off than worse off. Obviously that is clear. But the point of this video is, I have seen a lot of folks that have had a ‘hard landing’ retiring in Thailand that ended up pretty all right and I think a lot of that is because the lower cost of living allows folks to take kind of a breathing space, kind of reassess their situation, maybe make some different arrangements either in their finances or business arrangements presumably outside of Thailand, and sort of get themselves back in order and then a hard landing sometimes turns into a pretty nice little life here in Thailand. I have seen that happen on multiple occasions, not impossible.
Again it is going to be circumstantially dependent. You are definitely going to want to come into Thailand with a better financial situation rather than a worse one but I have definitely seen folks who were having a tough time sort of in their business endeavours or their career didn't quite go where they wanted it to go who ended up having a really nice time, a really nice retirement here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
