Scrutiny of DTV "Nomads" at Thai Immigration Checkpoints?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well we are discussing issues associated with heightened scrutiny of so-called Nomads on the Destination Thailand Visa at Immigration checkpoints. So what are we talking about here?
Well as I have discussed in some other videos, now Elite Visa holders are being heavily scrutinized especially when they are having their new visas affixed, so for those who are unaware, Elite Visas work in 5-year increments and when they affix the initial sticker you have to wait another five years before you get the other one or the later one if you have like a 10-year, 15-year or 20-year Elite program membership. The thing to understand about this is they are scrutinizing those folks and it's also now looking like they are scrutinizing DTV holders.
I've had two different contacts come to us, well prospective clients, but folks that have contacted us and told us, “Yeah, when I came through this last time, I've been using my DTV a while, they were really sort of like "what are you doing here?" "are you really a tourist?", "do you work here?" That's the big issue, "are you working in Thailand?" And we've seen this "tourist" sort of "intent" sort of scrutiny associated with the Elite Visa and now I am starting to hear a little bit of anecdotal evidence from DTV Visa holders that they are being looked at. Now I haven't heard anything about anybody being denied entry. I have not yet heard about anybody being denied extension yet, although there was some anecdotal evidence of that a few months ago; talked about that at the time. At least for now though, it looks like and this is probably due to the fact the DTV is a young Visa; it was only created about 18 months ago. But that said, it's still in existence and I think as time goes on there is going to be more heightened scrutiny of people that are using the DTV to effectively live in Thailand because again it was formed under this opaque notion of people being nomads, so they weren't going to live here but it would be a convenience thing; you don't have to get a new Visa every time you come to Thailand. You're bouncing around through Southeast Asia, you can just come through on your DTV, get stamped in for 6 months, use your time as you need it and then move on. Again, I have talked about this in other videos. I think more scrutiny is probably coming but I am hearing anecdotal evidence of scrutiny at airports albeit not yet having the conclusion of denying entry or anything.
That said, it remains to be seen how all this plays out, so we will certainly be keeping people updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
